Dear Friends of W&CF, After twelve years as the co-owner of Women & Children First bookstore, Lynn Mooney will retire at the end of September 2026. Together with current co-owner Sarah, Lynn has hand picked her colleague, Raven Stubbs Stone, to be her successor. Raven has worked at Women & Children First in various roles since 2020, and is thrilled to join Sarah as the bookstore’s new co-owner. Lynn was a W&CF bookseller and manager, before becoming a co-owner in 2014. During her tenure, Lynn served as the president of the Great Lakes Independent Booksellers Association (GLIBA), an officer on the board of the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce, and a key organizer of the wildly popular annual Chicagoland Independent Bookstore Day crawl. Book groups have been a focus of Lynn’s, leading as many as three book groups (Classics of Women’s Literature, Women Aging with Wisdom & Grace Discussion Group, and the Banned Books group) at one time. It’s a testament to Lynn’s care and cultivation of community that all three of these groups have decided to continue on after her retirement, led by other colleagues and friends of the store. Lynn is the Louise Penny expert; the one who asks to pet your dog and can instantly identify its breed; the one whose shelf talkers are written in penmanship so neat it makes school teachers weep with joy; the steady presence in our receiving area “playing with the books” or in the stacks offering you a thoughtful recommendation. Born and raised in Detroit, Raven Stubbs Stone is an artist, educator, and consultant. She first joined the Women & Children First as the online sales lead, building out our online store processes during a world pandemic. While being the Executive Director for Playmakers Lab, an arts education non-profit, Raven has been our first manager of people & culture. In this role, Raven has piloted HR procedures and grown the pedagogy of the store as it wrestles with its existence at the intersection of mission and business, and the contradictions within. The fall chill has arrived in Chicago! Cozy up in the bookstore for one (or more) of these November book events! Join us in celebrating Sara Paretksy’s latest release, Bad Company! The date of this event is especially auspicisous as it coincides with Women & Children First’s 47th birthday! We’ve had the honor of hosting Sara for nearly every book she’s published throughout her prolific career; we’re thrilled to welcome her back once more for this book-signing and conversation with mystery writer Lori Rader-Day! A hilarious thrill ride exploring the mysteries of the mind-body connection, Gemma Correll’s graphic memoir is shot through with the absurd knowledge that there is no linear way through Anxietyland, nor any cure-alls—but there are ways to feel better if you keep trying to move forward. Join Ebony Walden to discuss her new book, “Where I’m From: A Poetic Journey Across Five Continents” , in conversation with Deborah D. Douglas, author of “The U.S. Civil Rights Trail: A Traveler’s Guide to the People, Places, and Events That Made the Movement” Ebony’s soulful memoir follows her journey backpacking and volunteering across five continents and fifteen countries, where she wrote “Where I’m From” poems with new friends. Together, they will explore Black diasporic travel, cultural memory, and how journeys across landscapes shape history, identity, and belonging, followed by an audience Q&A and book signing. A visually striking exploration of money—and the lack of it—in America told through the lives of ten individuals, from a Pulitzer Prize–winning data journalist and artist. Mijares asks readers to linger in the white spaces between phrases and swim in the undercurrents of thought, moving from the microscopic to the mythic. Violent wave is both landscape and journey, inviting the reader to wade through its depths and surface profoundly changed. This National Poetry Series–winning debut collection asks how we can make meaning in our lives during a time of ecological crisis and rampant social injustice. by @wcfbook
✈️📖 Travel as a way home. Join us Wed., Nov 11 at 7pm for an evening with Ebony Walden, celebrating her new memoir Where I'm From: A Poetic Journey Across Five Continents, in conversation with Deborah D. Douglas, author of Moon U.S. Civil Rights Trail. In 2010, Ebony quit her job and set off solo across five continents. She taught in Guatemala, volunteered in India, led poetry workshops in Kenya, and paraglided over the Swiss Alps. Everywhere she went, she wrote "Where I'm From" poems with the people she met. 🌍✍🏾 Together, Ebony and Deborah will talk about Black diasporic travel, cultural memory, and how the places we move through shape who we become.
