A huge shoutout to @mkiimusik for creating the visuals to ‘Limbo’. His tireless work on making the visuals match the aggression of the music and the grittiness of the recording is greatly appreciated. Our best video yet! Thanks Matt.

Our debut LP ‘Liars Do Leaders Make’ is out now!

It’s up on all streaming services, and you can order the 12” vinyl through us or @smithsfoodgroup

This album has been in the works for a long while - though it only got mastered in 2020, some songs date back to as far as 2016-2017, so it’s great to have it out in the world at long last. It’s a great document of the work the four of us (and Mike who wrote the song ‘Every Second Is A Wound’) put into creating heavy music that feels honest and natural but still catches you off guard with unexpected song structures and strangely angular, but memorable riffs. That was the intention anyway.

Whether or not we will get to play these songs live with all that’s going on in the world is still uncertain, but we hope you get the opportunity to play it loud in its entirety and do a little headband.

Thanks so much to @smithsfoodgroup for your friendship and help in releasing this record.

(Rough translation from Dutch) ‘If ever in recent history there was a time to be angry, it is now. Yes, we have it fucking good in the Netherlands, but during this pandemic we all had to give up and suffer, and that certainly applies to young people and artists. Add to that in the UK a Brexit + a BoJo and you have more than enough ingredients to go crazy for a few hours while you play guitar, bass and drums and the necessary curses and political-social advice into the microphone spits. Hardcore (punk) is the ideal vehicle for this anyway.

That is a very easy and not too respectful interpretation on our part, especially when you consider that Absentees here delivers a debut album with Liars Do Leaders Make with eleven mature songs. Songs like Start A Fire and Lay My Weapons Down that are a lot better and more varied than what we described above. Yet you can't ignore the fact that the English band is quite angry and that this comes off very nicely from this debut album that was not entirely coincidentally written during the lockdown. Single Only Human, which we got to choose from last month, exemplifies the coupling of strong, compelling songwriting and healthy hardcore punk aggression. The zeitgeist is also nicely reflected in the impressive video. Closer When All Else Fails comes in 7 minutes with a bunch of vicious breaks, post-like accelerations, even more brutal vocals and finally derails into a bowl of noise. Good bouncer guys!

Absentees' debut album Liars Do Leaders Make will be released Friday June 4, 2021 via Smithsfoodgroup DIY and can be heard today on NMTH via the stream below.’

Thanks to the guys and gals over at @nmthype for writing a lovely review of (and streaming) the upcoming album Liars Do Leaders Make. Head over to https://nmth.nl/absentees-liars-do-leaders-make/ to listen to the whole thing right now! And yes; we are ‘quite angry’ about many, many things. by @weareabsentees

‘No One’ is out today. It is our third and final single from our debut LP ‘Liars Do Leaders Make’ which is out this Friday 4th June through @smithsfoodgroup

This song is a slow one. Huge tension followed by crushing release, perfect for this sunny summer weather we’re having.
