It’s been a while since I’ve introduced myself on here - hi, I’m Henri, the founder of Babel.

For the past two or so years, Babel has been my baby. I work on all aspects of the business as a team of one and am based between London and Somerset.

After frequently getting headaches from burning candles and becoming increasingly frustrated with the lack of transparency in the industry, I decided to start Babel. The dream was to make a candle that had genuine transparency and true sustainability at the core of its mission, without sacrificing quality.

Running Babel on my own definitely has its challenges. If there’s anything you’d particularly like to know about running a small business and Babel in particular, let me know in the comments!

Wrapping up this batch of candles in the Babel studio for @boroughkitchen last week, who I am thrilled to say are now stocking Kaamos in all 5 of their London stores in Battersea Power Station, Borough Market, Islington, Chiswick and Hampstead.

Head on down if you’re near a location; they’ll be burning in the shops from next week!

This is how to refill your Babel candle. No messy wax going everywhere, no heating…and the little wax discs make great firelighters.

With refills, our candles are not single-use objects. Instead, they become something more circular, to be refilled, re-used and enjoyed for a long, beautiful lifetime.

There are a number of good reasons.

By blending with beeswax, coconut oil creates a softer, more consistent wax, helps the candle melt more evenly and lowers its overall burning temperature. That gentler heat helps the essential oils (many of which would break down at the burning temperatures of pure beeswax) diffuse into the air more gradually, improving both scent projection and a longer, slower burn.

We use organic coconut oil that has been gently refined with steam to remove the scent molecules, so that its own naturally distinctive aroma doesn’t compete with that of the essential oils.

Adding coconut oil also gives us a beautifully smooth, creamy wax blend that is much more stable and retains the beautiful, natural character of beeswax.

I like to believe Babel candles are different because of what’s inside.

55% organic white beeswax from Germany.
36% organic coconut oil from Sri Lanka.
9% organic essential oils (varies by candle, fully disclosed on the website and packaging)

Absolutely nothing else.

I can almost guarantee that your candle at home won’t tell you what’s in it. If it does, then it almost certainly won’t go further than ‘parfum’. I think my customers deserve better, so that’s why I decided to tell you exactly what goes into one of my candles.

Samar is one of those Arabic words that doesn’t quite have a direct English equivalent. It comes from the verb ‘samara’, meaning to stay up late together in pleasant conversation; evenings filled with storytelling and Arabic music and poetry that stretch long into the night.

In many parts of the Arab world, where the heat of the day keeps people indoors, samar has also become synonymous with the hours after sunset, when the air cools and friends and family gather once again. It’s a word that evokes not just a time of day, but a way of spending it.

There’s something beautifully unhurried about samar. No agenda, just the simple pleasure of conversation, shared company and letting the evening unfold.

Even the word itself carries a poetic connection to the night, sharing roots with words that describe the darkness of evening and the shaded side of the moon.

That feeling is exactly what I wanted to capture in Samar: a candle for long conversations with friends, quiet music, and those rare evenings you never quite want to end.

Here’s 5 examples of what it means for a Babel candle to be certified organic by @soilassociation.

It isn’t always immediately obvious what might make a candle certified organic, and why it even matters. But organic certification impacts much more than just the end product. It affects the entire supply chain and covers everything from animal welfare and land composition to pest management and packaging.

These are just 5 reasons I believe organic certification is important; there are many, many more.

The first in a series of original linocuts by me, exploring Babel’s certified organic ingredients in more detail.

NUTMEG (01) - native to Indonesia’s Banda Islands, nutmeg grows inside a bright yellow fruit that splits open when ripe to reveal a glossy brown seed wrapped in a vivid crimson lace called mace. Both are prized spices, but they come from the same fruit.

Nutmeg essential oil is distilled from the dried seed using steam, capturing its warm, resinous and gently sweet aroma.

The botanical name Myristica fragrans means ‘fragrant myrrh’, from the Greek myristikos (‘of myrrh’) and the Latin fragrans (‘sweet-smelling’). For centuries, nutmeg was one of the world’s most coveted spices, once worth more than its weight in gold and traded across continents long before the modern spice trade.

Our certified organic nutmeg essential oil is sourced from India, where nutmeg has been cultivated for centuries in the humid tropical south. Today, India, specifically the state of Kerala, is one of the world’s leading producers, with most of its nutmeg grown on small spice farms beneath canopies of pepper, cloves and other tropical crops.

You can find nutmeg essential oil in Kaamos.
