Size changes the maths. The curve steepens above 5ct. Again above 10ct. The same quality below 2ct does not behave the same way. Then origin: Kashmir was mined for five years in the 1880s! Nothing since. Burma and Brazil still produce but the material coming out now is not the material that came out then. The exceptional stones stopped in the 90s. Mogok unheated, pigeon blood on the paper, is the narrowest thing in this trade… almost none of it is new. Which is the point! Anything easy to find is priced like it was easy to find. The rest never reaches a floor. It moves between people who have known each other twenty years, and it is spoken for before anyone photographs it. Right room. Right time. Someone willing to show you. Ed ruscha works and why I keep coming back to him 1. Artists who make “pieces”, 1976. He wrote the word in quotation marks. That’s the entire joke and it’s still funny fifty years later 2. Twentysix gasoline stations, 1963. His first book! 26 photographs of petrol stations, no commentary. The library of congress refused a copy because they couldn’t work out what it was for 3. Large trademark with eight spotlights, 1962. The fox logo painted at a scale that makes you look at the shape instead of reading it 4. Oof, 1962. Mood!!! 5. The LA county museum on fire, 1965. He painted the museum burning three years before the fire 6. Stains, 1969. Seventy five stains on paper made from wine, egg, blood, axle grease. An exact grid built from the least precious materials available 7. Cold beer beautiful girls, 1993. Sixty years proving a word is an object. I work in a trade where four words on a lab report move a stone by five times its price. Same idea, different paper. All world credits to Ed ruscha @edruschaofficial 8.
