On the 23rd March 2016 I took 3 young people to see @AlessiasMusic (Alessia Cara) at the @electricbrixtonofficial as part of my Arts programme for @xlplondon one of those young people was @LolaYounggg who 14 at the time and I was dropping her home last. I clearly remember telling her that Alessia was only 19 at the time and Lola’s response was “she’s only 5 years older than me, I can get there”.
I remember feeling like I had seen a light go on and I continued to watch her journey in to @theBRITSchool and invited her to perform at @GreenBeltfestival in August that year.
By 2017 I got to see her perform for a room full of industry A&Rs @thebedfordpub and remember seeing @rbleu1of1 mega excited about her and I’d never really seen the industry back a kid I had worked with that enthusiastically before.
Then as I left XLP Lola went off into the industry and we would bump into each other randomly in Crystal Palace or other spots like the lobby of Universal music, at some point she performed at my book launch at Tileyard.
Then 2022 I helped book @Natalie_Lindi on a show with her thanks to Kojo Samuels kojomusicofficial, then went to her gig in Islington with another young person I mentored @darrenfbass who is the bass player in her band, then we saw each other @thegreatescape and then she was performing on the same stage as @CraeWolff in Silver Hayes at @Glastofest.
Now I’m watching her pick up a Grammy 10 years after that Alesia Cara show.
Lola has worked her ass off over those last 10 years and I’m so proud to see her hard work pay off. I cannot and am not taking credit for her success but having worked with so many talented people over the years it is really satisfying to have played a small part in that journey.
As an artist developer and youthworker I have worked with so many talented to young people and Lola’s success is a reminder and an encouragement, that with the talent, the drive, the team and the will to overcome obstacle anything is indeed possible if you can access the opportunity.
Alesia would have no idea that Lola was in the crowd that night and I hope there is another 14 year old watching Lola thinking… if she can make it, just maybe…. by @weareimpactart

I accompanied a group of young people for a presenting workshop at the BBC as part of the lead up to @NewGen_Fest next week 29/7/26 in Walpole Park Ealing. It’s not just about putting on a show but empowering young people with access into the creative industries taken in BBC London by @weareimpactart
