Save this table and note these extra tips:
- Always store your containers deep inside the fridge or freezer. Don’t place them close the door.
- Use clean and dry containers specially made for food storage.
- If you know you won’t be using the milk in the next 3 days, freeze it immediately.
-Always freeze smaller quantities (50-100 ml/container) and write the extraction date on them.
- If you have fresh milk at hand, always use that instead of frozen.
- It is normal that milk separates in 2 phases, shake it before feeding your baby.
- If possible, let unfreeze inside the refrigerator.
- To warm up, place in a lukewarm water bath or bottle warmer, never use microwave.
- Discard any leftovers, NEVER refrigerate or freeze again.

This is probably the biggest concern for any new breastfeeding family. Those who feed their newborns with formula know exactly how much milk their babies are getting but with the breast we have no idea and this is when we start questioning ourselves.

But trust me, the exact amount is not important at all. If your baby meets these few points, be sure they are getting enough milk. If any of them is missing, seek professional advice, ideally from someone who knows about breastfeeding. 🤱🏻

One of the indicators that the baby is getting enough milk is the number of diapers they soil during the first few days of life.
Day 1️⃣: 1 wee and 1 poo of black stool called meconium.
Day 2️⃣: 2 wees and 2 poos of meconium. Pink stains of urate crystals may appear.
Day 3️⃣: 2 to 3 diapers with wee and 2 to 3 diapers with transition poo of greenish or grayish color. Pink stains of urate crystals may appear.
Day 4️⃣: 4 to 5 wees and 3 to 4 poos. It’s also possible that there may be no bowel movement, however, this pause shouldn’t last more than 24 hours.
Day 5️⃣: 6 or more wees and at least two poos of mustard color, indicating that the meconium has been completely expelled.

🩸 If pink stains continue beyond the third day, it could be an indicator that the baby is not consuming enough milk. It is advisable to consult the pediatrician immediately.
💩 The number of bowel movements from the fourth day onwards can vary greatly among healthy babies, but if there are none, it is recommended to check if the baby is gaining enough weight.

_____________________________

Día 4️⃣: 4 a 5 pises y 3 a 4 cacas.

A relactation tube (supplemental nursing system) allows a baby to receive extra milk (either breastmilk or formula) while feeding at the breast.

Why do we use it?
Because even when supplementation is needed, the baby is still stimulating the breast at the same time, which helps increase milk production.

The tube sits next to the nipple and delivers milk while the baby sucks. Sometimes, especially when babies have low suction strength, we can gently push the milk through the tube with a syringe to help the flow and keep the baby motivated.

The first attempts don’t always work perfectly. Every baby’s mouth is different, and sometimes it takes a few adjustments before everything flows smoothly.

My favourite part is hearing those little satisfied drinking sounds and seeing mothers supplement without feeling that they are “losing” their breastfeeding journey.

These videos are from sessions with different families. Every situation is unique and requires different approaches. by @wearemilllk

In the hospital, this mother was told she “didn’t have milk yet” and was advised to supplement with formula by bottle.
Her milk actually came in between day 4 and 5, which is completely normal.

By the time they got home, supplementation had already started. The result?
• Sore, damaged nipples
• A baby struggling at the breast due to nipple-teat confusion
• A stressed mom feeling guilt and pain

Today we worked on:
✔️ Correcting latch and positioning
✔️ Trying different breastfeeding positions
✔️ Supplementing without a bottle, using the finger-syringe technique
✔️ Using the breast pump to increase stimulation and make up for the missed signals
✔️ And yes, also learning how to prepare formula safely when it’s needed

Early support matters.
Transition milk coming in on day 4–5 is normal.
And supplementation doesn’t have to mean the end of breastfeeding.

_____

Between law and ethics there is a gap… and this is exactly where things like this happen. Have you come across this kind of advertising in kids’ spaces too?

Today I had an emergency visit with a mother who gave birth by emergency C-section at 28 weeks.

Her baby is still in the neonatal unit, and she has just returned home. She hasn’t yet been allowed skin-to-skin contact, so she’s now starting a pumping protocol to keep her milk supply while the baby stays in hospital.

She was worried because “nothing is coming out”, but at just four days postpartum, what appears is colostrum —the first milk— rich in immunoglobulins, proteins and growth factors.

Colostrum from mothers of preterm babies is even more protective, containing higher levels of immune and bioactive components adapted to their babies’ needs.

Unless there’s a true hypogalactia (very rare), a mother’s body always begins milk production automatically, even without baby stimulation. Transitional milk will come in regardless; it may just take a bit longer when there’s no skin-to-skin or direct feeding.

Today we practised the Marmet technique —breast massage plus hand expression— and collected a few precious drops 💛. In the first days, it’s normal to get only 2–20 ml per session, so small amounts like the one in the photo are perfectly normal.

The colostrum is stored in sterile syringes and sent to the hospital: first offered by feeding tube, then with breast-friendly methods like the finger-syringe technique —as shown in the video at the end of this post, recorded with another family I visited recently. This approach respects the baby’s natural rhythm and helps protect breastfeeding.

The key now is early, frequent stimulation and a calm, relaxed environment so that oxytocin —the hormone that triggers milk ejection— can do its job. Once transitional milk appears, she’ll continue with a breast pump to sustain production. by @wearemilllk

According to the official health organization recommendations, in developed countries, women with HIV are advised not to breastfeed due to the risk of transmission, even with undetectable viral loads. However, in resource-limited settings, breastfeeding is recommended due to the risks of formula feeding. This preliminary study, showing that infants breastfed by mothers on effective ART did not contract HIV, paves the way for a potential rethinking of recommendations in both contexts, offering new perspectives on safe breastfeeding practices.

_______
