July is Disability Pride Month, a time to celebrate people with disabilities, honor the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and promote disability culture and visibility.
This year’s theme is “We Belong Here, and We’re Here to Stay”, a call to action against the increasing threats to disability rights. At WIJO, we champion all our community members, and we’re committed to actively aligning with and supporting the disabled community.

Today marks the anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, which began on June 28, 1969, when police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club in New York City. In a courageous act of resistance against police violence and decades of discrimination, LGBTQ+ folks, especially trans women of color Marsha P. Johnson and Syvlia Rivera bravely fought back. This would initiate a global movement towards justice for the LGBTQA+ community.

At WIJO, we honor all those who have contributed to the liberation of LGBTQ+ people and remain committed to continuing this fight.

Today, please join us in celebrating Juneteenth, aka Freedom Day, aka Emancipation Day, commemorating this day in 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, TX, finally learned of their freedom under the Emancipation Proclamation.

We at WIJO are committed to liberation through education and empowerment, community and connection. We celebrate Freedom - and everyone's right to Freedom - every day, through the power of Jazz - America's unique art form, Black American Music.

Today is the last day of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month!

The theme of this year’s AANHPI Heritage Month is “A Legacy of Leadership & Resilience”, and Jazz Master Toshiko Akiyoshi is a gleaming example of this ideal. One of the greatest contributors to Big Band Jazz, Toshiko Akiyoshi is an American jazz pianist, composer, arranger, and bandleader. Akiyoshi received fourteen Grammy Award nominations and was the first woman to win Best Arranger and Composer awards in Down Beat magazine’s annual Readers’ Poll. In 2007 she was named an NEA Jazz Master by the U.S. National Endowment for the Arts. Akiyoshi was born in Liaoyang, Manchuria in 1929 (age 95 years), to a Japanese family. Akiyoshi’s Japanese heritage is distinctly present in her music, and her music remains planted firmly in jazz. She found a way to truly add to the musical genre, by expressing her own unique voice and perspective; breaking barriers by expanding the art form of Jazz. She is a wildly prolific composer, arranger, and performer; she has dozens of recordings and albums spanning seven decades of a vast career. She has used her position as an artist to express human resilience; In 1999, she composed the three-part suite Hiroshima: Rising from the Abyss. She is a true leader in Jazz and beyond, and has offered so much to American culture, and the world, through her music.
