Parodos kuratorius – JL Murtaugh (@syndkt).

Atidarymas birželio 3 d. 19:00.

Paroda yra Viktorijos magistrinio darbo, rengto Vilniaus dailės akademijos Grafikos katedroje, ir jos rezidencijos Rupert 2026 m. kovą kulminacija.

Rupert programas finansuoja Vilniaus miesto savivaldybė ir Lietuvos kultūros taryba, papildomą partnerių paramą teikia INVL. Viktorijos Rybakovos projektą remia Vilniaus dailės akademija (@vilniausdailesakademija).

Rupert alumna Viktorija Rybakova (@weatherinvilnius) will present her solo exhibition, “Gestures of Fear,” next Wednesday.

To begin, a film examines a series of emotive vignettes, challenging the audience to see what she does. Then, a series of large-format panels isolate, freeze, and overlay them as a sequence. Juxtaposing them with similar motifs sourced from historical and cultural research, she forms a complete taxonomy of fear without ever revealing their causes or faces.

Curated by JL Murtaugh (@syndkt).

Opening on June 3 at 19:00.

The exhibition Gestures of Fear is the culmination of Viktorija’s MA thesis work at the Graphic Department of the Vilnius Academy of Art, and her Rupert residency in March 2026.

Rupert’s programmes are funded by the Vilnius Municipality and the Lithuanian Council for Culture, with additional partner support from INVL. Viktorija Rybakova’s project is supported by the Vilnius Academy of Arts (@vilniausdailesakademija). by @weatherinvilnius

Last day of my research residency at Cdla- le centre des livres d’artistes. It has been a pleasure to work with its director Didier Mathieu, who has so much knowledge and passion for artist’s books medium, and can speak fondly about every book in the collection. The time in the residency would not be complete without Bastien Fery, poet and Literature postgrad. student at Sorbonne Nouvelle University, who helped me to understand French poetry and Gherasim Luca’s work. I am grateful for our long and engaging discussions with with Didier and Bastien, and kind support of Jean-Marc Berguel and Angelique Tassin of the cdla. Looking forward to come back next year and make an exhibition together. Thank you for @culturemoves for making this reaearch trip possible. Last but not least thank you Suzette for making most memorable lunches. Merci à tous et toutes! taken in Centre des Livres d'artistes by @weatherinvilnius

Book smuggling adventures (longer read)

With a singing heart, I am embarking on a book smuggling mission to Tokyo. The mission is twofold: to bring a collection of Lithuanian artists books and to give an artist talk about my book “Shared knowledge”. I don’t know how to put exactly into words this cosmic spin of a decade, but I felt that it was meant to happen. I had exactly the same feeling ten years ago, when I started researching books at the Vilnius University Library smuggled from the West into Lithuania by my literary “grandfather” Genutis Procuta (read more here: https://viktorijarybakova.com/interview-with-genutis-procuta-lithuanian-canadian-book-smuggler/). I also had that same feeling earlier this year when I received the appointment at the Graphic Arts cabinet at the same library. I feel it is the place that brings me peace and sense of belonging; where the rivers of time flow past and through my days, so that time itself feels like home; a space where meaningful conversations take place and turn into living thoughts.

One of the many things that I have learned at my recent workplace, is that history and our present is made of a life story of every single human that lived before us. These people from the past touch us every day with what they have left to us, what they lived through, how they dealt with challenges of their time. History to me became not just dates of the key battles I learned at school, it became traceable through emotional gestures: acts of love, courage, fear or cowardice. I have learned that how I live will affect the future inhabitants in ways that I will not be able to fully understand today, but I am certain that what I do and how I live will leave a mark in the brain folding of the planet Earth.

Genutis Procuta’s honourable life touched me in a way I could have never foreseen and I am glad to bring a piece of his life message to Tokyo Metropolitan Central Library this October. May he inspire many more! taken in Vilnius University Library by @weatherinvilnius

Happy to share the new artist’s book I have been working on this winter in the frame of @rietveldacademie “Refuge-fleeing, flowing, leaking” conference festival at @stedelijkmuseum, a wonderful collaboration with @marcoslutyens, curated by @erikasprey.
More info about our offering here:

Spaghetti and sun visions is an epistolary conversation about and through dreams between artist Marcos Lutyens and artist Viktorija Rybakova. How can dreaming become a form of knowledge making? The artists thought of a way to expand the mind and evoke divergent thinking through colours, shapes, associations, symbols. In agreement that life is constantly semiotic and that it is us "the messengers and receivers" who create new symbols, the artists questioned what kind of symbols and meanings haunt our dreams today? Can active exchange of symbols generate a new cosmology seen through dreams, felt through book makings and told through the eyes? This hour-long presentation and hypnosis will invite participants to connect "eyes" and weave the symbologies together. by @weatherinvilnius

So happy to be selected for @morpho_be research residency. It’s a wonderful place that supports artists and invests in continuous relationships, honouring solidarity and art as a healing practice. I think in the contemporary pace of productivity we tend to forget that art is a spiritual practice, that can transform, nourish and support. Our collective wells of creativity need to be refilled time after time and MORPHO is definitely a place for this. Come visit us! by @weatherinvilnius

I learned recently that in Chinese culture the future is behind us, unlike in the West where we look forward. And the truth is we can not see it, so lets celebrate living in the moment and enjoy it as much. I wish everyone a shiny 2021, like a never ending disco party! by @weatherinvilnius
