Summer - enjoying my ration of common humanity. by @weaver.kellan

Spring. The mind and body have regained their constitution. Good health is an otherworldly pleasure, I could not be more pleased to be back to full mental and physical loads. A couple thousand pages read and some good hours back on the bike; I've missed both dearly. Hopefully I've reached the end of my concussion experiences for the foreseeable future. Risk mitigation is the new name of the game and it's going quite well (minus the cacti). by @weaver.kellan

Wow, long concussion. Some 240 acupuncture needles in the neck and a load of eye tracking exercises later, I'm finally back on the bike and feeling normal. Was confined to menial tasks and sitting around for a good 4 months there. Good to finally be coming back to myself, pretty trippy feeling so off for so long. Overjoyed to be getting back to some real training and living, though definitely very out of shape. No racing for a while, can't risk taking another knock for a bit. Gotta put the whole learning how to go fast on pavement on hold for a bit. Colorado is pretty different without having the bike in the life, so im looking forward to coming back to things going into next semester. taken in Caspian Sea by @weaver.kellan

Summer.

Took some bad hits to the head so I'm out for a bit. Probably won't race anything cool for a while. Crashed in a crit and took concussion three for the year. Bagged the rest of my season after that aside from a half assed local crit performance or two. Ate it hard bikepacking a few weeks later and have been concussed for six weeks now.

Hoping to get some gravel in this year but everything's kind of up in the air. by @weaver.kellan

Day 8 (yesterday): back home before lunchtime!

60 miles from Rosalia to Tekoa, then back down to Moscow.

What an amazing ride, 675 pristine mostly off-road Washington miles. Good to beck in our own beds (or any beds!) after seven and a half days riding.

We had one busted shifter, one terrible case of covid (me), and by some miracle, only one flat tire. Whole lot could have gone worse out there.

This ride perfectly encapsulates the purpose and opportunities provided through the Washington student cycling League. Before my local team was founded during my 8th grade year, I had no interest in endurance sports or anything like it. Thanks to my exposure to cycling through the student league, I happily find myself wholeheartedly enamored with it. If it weren't for the league, I would not be set up to lead a healthy, rewarding adult life.

Despite falling in love with being on the bike, the greatest times I have had with the student league all revolve around the social network created by the league. Without spending time with my team and their families at races and on team rides, none of this would mean anything.

The Washington Student Cycling League has created a phenomenal environment to foster the growth of student riders into healthy adults. To maintain and grow the level and quality with which they are able to continue this goal, small donations go a long way.

Day 7: One hour of sleep since Wenatchee.
Ritzville to Rosalia, 60 miles.

Underestimated how slow the trail would be, had to bail to pavement to make it to water. Next stop Moscow! by @weaver.kellan

Day Six, Wenatchee to Ritzville. Bout 150 miles with an all-nighter. Took a power nap in Euphrata.

Gotta beat the heat somehow. Bushwhacked for a solid thirty minutes when the road was ten feet to our right. That was funny.

One of the coolest things to think about as we pass more and more student league areas is the difference in culture between rider's homes. Seattle had a definite head down keep to yourself attitude, while Roslyn had nothing but smiles and hellos. What's cool is how within the league, all those ideas just go away and everybody gets along great. That's what the Washington Student Cycling League does, bring people together.

Day 5: good day to be a climber! 80 miles with around 10k feet of climb.

Woke up Friday morning with Nick's cold from a week ago, gonna be sick as a dog the next few days. Luckily I love climbing, so life was good. By far the most fun day I've had. Feeling worse this morning, but a bed last night was great, thanks Doug!

Done with the mountains and cold nights, now we just have to beat the heat! by @weaver.kellan

Day 4, Carnation to Roslyn. 76 miles over the pass.

Life is good, pain day tomorrow. Getting over the pass was easy, but mission ridge will hurt.

Stopped in Roslyn, one of the first WSCL race venues I raced at. Good to be back in small towns, feels more like home. Lot more interest from the locals in where we're going and such. Two people offered to buy me a water outside the grocery store, and one even offered a lift to the top of the first climb tomorrow (We'll be regretting declining that).

There's definitely a friendliness in the air with it being the fourth and all. Where most of the locals just see us as fellow countrymen today, the other cyclists we pass have an extra sense of kinship. Chatted with one woman who was scouting an upcoming gravel race, a pair of buddies with no lights in the tunnel, and guy with the prettiest gold accents on his bike I've ever seen. All were happy to chat, and even happier to offer us food and supplies.

Nothing builds comradely like suffering up hills on bikes together. Few bonds are tighter than those of cyclists, and that's why the student league means so much for Washington's youth. Please support at https://washingtonleague.org/donate/ by @weaver.kellan

Day 3: functional-ish bikes and slightly more functional legs!

50 miles with some singletrack and zig-zagging, nothing crazy. Left Seattle around 2pm. A puncture slowed things down, but settled in carnation in the late afternoon. Nice to have an easy day before life gets real.

Happy birthday Steve! Thanks for the fix and company, good to be matching jerseys with someone.

One of the coolest things about cycling is the level of support amongst it's riders. It often seems impossible to give back as much help as we receive from each other. Whether it's a quick but painful cable replacement from Steve or a new wheel 15 minutes before a race because you taco'd it @liamaschell, riders are there for each other no matter what.

Trail etiquette is very different out here in bigger areas than in Moscow, but almost every cyclist waves back or at least smiles, with many even stopping for a quick chat. Just about everybody would give us a tube or hand if stuff went wrong though, even those who don't wave back. I don't think you get that kind of support net with any other sport. Since we are often trekking off to far away places with a shared reliance on a fragile machine we call a bicycle to get us home, it allows us to be more empathetic. We all know what it's like to get stuck on the side of the road, so we all do whatever we can to keep each other going. Cycling makes us more human.

My spare tire at the side of the road has always been my teams and the Washington Student Cycling League. From road side fixes from Steve and countless hours at a coach's shop back home to opportunities to race, develop leadership skills, and develop a healthy lifestyle presented by the league, everybody had had my back.

The only way kids in the future will have these same amazing opportunities is through the support of its riders. The league has given all its members the biggest tailwind into life they can ask for. The least we can do is give em a spare tube and some CO2.

Please donate at https://washingtonleague.org/donate/ if you are able. If you've got anything S-Works or a sprinter van, please consider giving double :) by @weaver.kellan
