Weaving is one of humanity’s oldest creative practices, and one of its richest mythologically, metaphorically, and aesthetically. This group exhibition teases out themes of form, language, and storytelling in works by Miguel Arzabe, Ricki Dwyer, Terri Friedman, Gego, Trude Guermonprez, Porfirio Gutiérrez, Channing Hansen, Andrea Higgins, Ruth Laskey, Dinh Q. Inspired by the similarities between weaving and Pointillism, interlaced strings of pure color blend in the viewer’s eye to produce discernible tones.

Newhouse, 2026, hand jacquard weaving (cotton), 21” x 27.5”

Metro Dots is a series of abstract textiles that depict imagined architectural spaces. The work is meant to straddle the line between the tangible and the
illusory by using visual layers that simultaneously reveal and obscure. Inspired by Pointillism, interlaced strings of pure color blend in the viewer’s eye to produce discernible tones.

This was made during a recent Digital Weaving Lab residency at Praxis using the TC2 jacquard loom, that controls every thread individually.

Susie Taylor received a BFA in Fiber from the Kansas City Art Institute, an MFA in Design from UCLA, and later earned HGA’s Certificate of Excellence in Handweaving. She has an extensive background designing jacquard upholstery fabrics for American mills in Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey. Based in Rochester, New York, Susie maintains an active studio practice and is represented by Johansson Projects in Oakland, California. She has taught at Penland, Arrowmont, and Tyler School of Art and Architecture.

Textiles & Tea is a weekly artist interview series, hosted by the Handweavers Guild of America, Inc., featuring fiber artists from around the globe.

I love that there is still a lot of room for innovation by taking a traditional weave structure and seeing if I can elevate it or modernize it.

This piece is off the loom. The pleats are ready to be folded into a new, optical composition rendered in creamy white & chocolate brown linen. It will be on its way to its’ forever home next month.
