One of the easiest ways to kill a carnivorous plant? Tap water.

Carnivorous plants evolved in places where nutrients are scarce, so they’re especially sensitive to the minerals and dissolved salts found in most tap water.

Those minerals can build up over time and damage the roots, even when the plant looks fine at first.

For most carnivorous plants, use distilled water, reverse osmosis water, or rainwater instead.

A small change that can make a huge difference.

From our family business to yours, we wanted to thank everyone who makes the conscious effort to shop small this holiday season and on the regular.

We Bite started as a passion project in our Royal St. apartment. Trays of carnivorous plants became a utility closet filled with plants, into a plant speakeasy, into pop-ups, into a 7th Ward plant shop and now a home on Franklin and St. Claude for the strange and peculiar.

New Orleans is the only city this evolution could have unfolded the way it did. We love our city, community and all of our customers that make this business possible.

That sparkle isn’t water.

The droplets covering a sundew are a sticky substance called mucilage, part of an incredibly effective trap built into the leaf itself.

An insect lands. It sticks. The plant responds.

It’s one of the things we love most about Drosera: what looks delicate and almost jewel-like is actually a highly specialized way of hunting.

What a night!

Thank you to everyone who came out to witness the unveiling of the Nepenthes bicalcarata the “Baby Fanged Pitcher Plant.”

Seeing the shop that full of people who are genuinely curious and excited about these plants are exactly why we love doing this.

MISSED THE REVEAL?

Good news. We still have Baby Fanged Pitchers available at the shop.

These are young plants, so you’re getting in at the beginning. The fangs come later. Consider this the start of the teething journey.

Available in-store while they last.

Clean water, ample light, and high humidity to encourage those fangs!

One last Butterwort Cemeterium before we lay this edition to rest.

September 19 is the final Cemeterium: Butterwort Edition of the Season of Carnivory, and only a handful of tickets remain.

Carlos created and captured this stunning piece filled with Butterworts; nestled with moss and tiny grave markers. RIP to those who dare. 🪰
