Hi, so we’ve bought a Mercedes Sprinter to convert into a camper for our family of 4.
We tried to buy an already converted van but very quickly realised that vans with 4+ belted seats were few and far between.
We’ve now bought a blank canvas to work on in the form of a Mercedes sprinter (2019), which has spent the first 4 years of its life as a lease vehicle.
We have no experience, no real idea of what we’re doing, but we’re excited to get stuck in and hopefully see this labour of love through to completion.

We’ve started this page because we’ve seen so many pages/posts out there but very few of them seem to give the level of details that an absolute beginner needs. There’s also not many pages that are fully transparent about how much everything costs.

We’re hoping to provide a compete beginners insight into our build and share the full cost breakdown of everything we do.

It would be great to have you along on our journey.

Thanks

Jack & Alice

Passenger Swivel Seat is in!

The first set of swivel bases we ordered didn’t fit! So they had to go back and we managed to get a set that do fit.

We’ve done the passenger one first as it’s the easy one. The driver side one is a bit more complicated as we will need to lower the handbrake first.

Total cost for both bases including delivery £304 by @webster_wagon

Rear seats

Our criteria for a set of rear seats was:
- Ideally seats that can fold down
- Isofix was a must have as they will predominantly be for the kids.
- The same/similar height as the front seats
- Reasonably priced

We spent months trawling through eBay and conversion websites looking for a set of seats and found it tough to find the right ones. They either didn’t have isofix, weren’t the right height or were way too expensive (£1800-£2000)!

We ended up finding a great set on eBay, the chap selling them converted new vans into wheelchair accessible vehicles. He’d remove these brand new seats from the vans and sell them on. We paid £350+£75 for delivery.

The only issue we had with the seats was that they were slightly lower than the front seats. Our solution to this was to buy a length of 50mmx1000mm box steel, which I cut down to size and bolted to the floor. I added a spreader plate under each bolt to distribute the load a bit better, then bolted the seats directly onto the steel.

Cost breakdown:
Seats including delivery £450
Box Steel (including delivery) £55
Bolts and spreader plates £20

Total - £525

The seats have been holding us from doing the floor so we can get cracking with that now!
