If I were building The 50 Best Hotel list, these properties would be on it. None of them are in a city, and every one of them is worth the extra flight.

Awasi Patagonia, Chile: Every villa comes with its own private guide and vehicle, facing the peaks of Torres del Paine.

Singita Kwitonda Lodge, Rwanda: You wake up on the edge of Volcanoes National Park and spend the morning trekking to sit with mountain gorillas.

Southern Ocean Lodge, Australia: A row of glass-walled suites perches above the wild Southern Ocean on Kangaroo Island.

Kisawa Sanctuary, Mozambique: Just a dozen bungalows spread across 300 hectares of beach, forest and dunes on Benguerra Island.

Six Senses Punakha, Bhutan: A “flying farmhouse” suspended above terraced rice fields in the Himalayas.

Some people call me Pamela, some people call me Mom, and the people I plan trips for call me when they want to wake up somewhere like this.

This was our busiest summer to date, and these five trips are the ones I keep thinking about.

Lake Como and Portofino: eight nights for a couple craving a getaway, starting at Passalacqua and finishing at Belmond Hotel Splendido, a week spent in two of Italy's most iconic spots.

Scandinavia: two weeks for a family of four across Denmark, Norway and Sweden, built around being outdoors, from the fjords and the countryside to long summer days.

East Africa: two couples trekking to the gorillas from Singita Kwitonda in Rwanda, then a traditional safari at Singita Sasakwa in Tanzania.

Indonesia: a honeymoon lived three ways, starting at Amankila in Bali, then Nihi Sumba, and ending in the jungle at Capella Ubud.

French Polynesia: five nights at Four Seasons Bora Bora, then five at The Brando for the ultimate R&R.

Fall is my favorite season to travel, and these are the places I think do it best.

The color arrives in waves. It starts with the aspens around Dunton in late September, moves through the Adirondacks and Vermont into October, settles over the vineyards of Champagne and Tuscany, reaches the Smokies, and finishes in November in the gardens above Lake Como and the maples of Kyoto.

Each one is a place to slow down, with long mornings, fires in the evening, and lunches that stretch into the afternoon while the hills change around you.

The 50 Best Hotels list for 2026 is out. And I have notes.

Some of these hotels are extraordinary. Some are good hotels with good PR teams.

Here's the thing about a list like this. Voters name the hotels they've stayed in recently, and the people casting those votes pass through Bangkok and Paris more often than they take two small planes to reach a camp in East Africa. So the list quietly rewards the hotels that are easier to visit, not the ones that are hardest to forget.

The truly unforgettable places are often the hardest to get to. That is not a coincidence.

It's time to get that girls trip out of the group chat! Los Cabos makes it an easy yes, with year-round sun where the desert meets the sea, so the only real decision is what kind of trip your group wants.

If your group wants to be looked after, it's Las Ventanas al Paraíso. Spend mornings at the spa and afternoons over tequila and ceviche at the Tequila & Ceviche Bar, then gather around a barbacoa dinner of agave-wrapped lamb, slow-cooked underground.

Food lovers should book Esperanza. Take a Mexican cooking class together, dig for clams on the beach for a clambake, and save the last night for Cocina del Mar, out on the rocks with the waves breaking below.

Viceroy is for the group that travels for the photos. The white architecture rises out of reflecting pools, so every angle comes already framed, and dinner is sushi under the woven nest at Nido.

And if everyone just wants to be in the water, Chileno Bay sits on one of the only swimmable beaches in Cabo. Snorkel with sea turtles, sail the Sea of Cortez on a private catamaran, then close the trip with a private dinner at The Mirador.
