I plan weddings for a living, and I just made the one choice I’d talk almost every bride out of 🤍 I’m planning my own wedding without a planner. Here’s why it works for me, and why it probably won’t for you.

Once we decided we were really doing this, I rolled up my sleeves and started planning. And I was so sure I’d hire a wedding planner, because I know exactly how much work goes into it.

But when I started researching, I didn’t click with anyone. What bothered me most was how slow or unresponsive most planners were. At our agency we reply to every enquiry within 24 to 48 hours, and if I can’t answer properly yet, I’ll at least send a quick note. And the ones I did speak to weren’t flexible enough, a lot had everything in-house and weren’t open to different suppliers, which just isn’t how I like to work. We always give our couples options (quality-checked, of course).

So I’m planning it all myself. I’ve done so many destination weddings that I know how to plan abroad in a new country. But I will 100% not be working on the days. I’m hiring a coordination team and briefing them on every detail, because I want to be fully present at my own wedding.

Now here’s the important part: please don’t do this unless you plan weddings professionally too. If you’re in a similar spot and didn’t click with any of the local planners, hire an international one, a destination wedding planner. They travel to you, they aren’t tied to one country’s suppliers, so you get far more options and someone who truly knows how to plan abroad.

I’m a wedding planner... and now I’m planning my own wedding. Here’s the honest version 🤍

It takes time, and not because you don’t know what you want. So much of planning is waiting on other people’s decisions, my husband’s, our families‘, everyone involved, and then chasing suppliers. You can love one vendor, but what if they don’t reply, especially when you’re trying to compare a few?

The dress hunt is stressful, at least for me. I don’t always know what I want and I don’t love the searching part. I just wish someone would tell me „this is it“.

I’m so happy we’re doing three weddings, because each one gets its own focus. Our wedding in Thailand is friends only, where we do exactly what we want. The Indian wedding is for my husband’s family, whose traditions matter deeply to them. And with my family we’re keeping it relaxed, a glamping weekend all together with a celebratory bbq. Different vibes, all us.

We’re focusing on the experience, not just the decor. It will still be beautiful, but what we really care about is the flow, what our guests see and feel from the moment they arrive.

We want it beautiful and yes, instagrammable, but we’d rather go minimal and high quality than fill the room with cheap bits. (Do I wish we had a bigger decor budget? Always, haha.)

Honestly, I wish I could hire a planner, I just didn’t click with the ones I met abroad, some took ages to reply and weren’t flexible with suppliers. Lucky for me, I am one, so I actually enjoy it. But I’m 100% bringing in a coordination team for the day, briefed with all my lists, because I want to be a guest at my own wedding. If I weren’t a planner, I’d have hired one in a heartbeat.

The guest list was the hardest part. Even keeping it to friends meant tough calls, people you’ve drifted from or who don’t quite fit the group. That one genuinely cost me sleep.

So if planning feels like a lot, even for someone who does this for a living, you’re not doing it wrong. It’s emotional, it’s layered, and it’s so worth it. And if you’d rather enjoy the journey than carry it all alone, that’s exactly what we do 🤍

A typical wedding day, hour by hour 🤍
Ever wondered how the day actually flows? Here’s a timeline we love, from the first curl at hair and makeup to dancing until sunrise.
Of course it never has to look exactly like this. Every wedding is different, and the right timeline depends on the season and where in the world you’re marrying. A little planner tip: always check what time the sun sets, and aim to have your ceremony finish just before it, so you catch that soft golden light for your photos.
A few other things that can shift everything: hair and makeup often take longer than couples expect, so give yourselves a generous buffer at the start. And not everyone does a first look before the ceremony. If you’d rather see each other for the very first time as you walk down the aisle, that’s beautiful too, it just moves your couple and family photos to after the ceremony and reshapes the afternoon.
The magic is in getting the flow right so the day feels effortless. That’s exactly the part we take off your plate 🤍

Wedding decor, decoded 🤍 the real costs no one shows you (11/100)

Welcome back to our series, where we plan your wedding together. Today: decor, my favourite topic, and the one that shocks almost every couple, even our luxury clients. And since I’m planning my own wedding right now, I’m living these exact decisions too, so I know both sides.

These are guidelines, not fixed prices, it always depends on your venue, guest count and details. But here are three real ranges from weddings we’ve done.

Intimate / Essentials, from around AED 20k. One&Only The Palm, 100 guests: mirror welcome sign, bridal bouquet and boutonniere, fountain decor, centrepieces, candles and a sweetheart table. Furniture and linens from the venue. Simple and beautiful.

Signature, from around AED 50k. Same venue, 70 guests, across two spaces: welcome signage, fountain decor, a ceremony arch, special ceremony and dinner chairs, bridal bouquet and boutonniere, seating chart and show plates. A little more elevated.

Luxury / Experiential, AED 100k and up. Burj Al Arab, 100 guests: a big statement arch, every chair and lounge piece handpicked, centrepieces, show plates, a large stage, and all the details, blankets, table numbers, fans, flowers everywhere.

And those Pinterest ballrooms with hanging florals and covered dancefloors? That starts around AED 150k and climbs from there.

We’re finally planning our own wedding 🤍

For those who don’t know me, I’m Barbara, a Dubai wedding planner... and a bride. Months ago I took you through our court wedding, and today I finally get to share the plans for our real celebration.

Here’s the honest part. I’m Russian, raised in Austria, now planning weddings in Dubai, and my husband was born in Dubai with family all over the world. One big wedding felt impossible to get right, so we made a decision that surprised even us. We’re doing three celebrations: the main one with friends only in Thailand, one in Dubai with his side, and a smaller intimate one back home with my family.
