My dad was the sweetest guy around. He was a genuine good guy: polite, honest, and personable. He treated everyone he met with respect and dignity. He was always supportive, and he never scolded me for making honest mistakes.

Shortly after retiring, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. He lived with it for over 20 years, and it was hard to watch. He played all of his cards right, but he got dealt a shit hand.

I lost a part of my dad a long time ago—partially from the disease, and partially from my absence. He passed away two weeks ago in hospice care, on my daughter’s second birthday. Today, we laid him to rest.

I’m proud to call him my dad, and I’m grateful for the example he set for me. I hope that one day Levi can say the same for me.
