The best outdoor gear is often the gear you forget about.

Based in Bend, Oregon, @mazamadesigns is rethinking one of the most overlooked pieces of outdoor equipment: hydration. From modular reservoirs and interchangeable components to thoughtfully engineered valves and bottles, the brand is proving that even the simplest objects deserve better design.

In an industry obsessed with the next big innovation, Mazama is focused on the smaller details that make equipment more functional, adaptable, and built to last.

Somewhere along the way, a simple titanium cup became one of the most recognizable objects in outdoor culture.

Lightweight, durable, and stripped of unnecessary detail, titanium has evolved from a specialized performance material into a symbol of considered design. From @snowpeak_official and @evernew_japan to @toaksoutdoor, @vargooutdoors, @countycomm_gov and @keithtitanium_official, independent brands have helped turn utilitarian equipment into objects of desire.

But there’s an irony in the obsession: a material celebrated for helping us carry less has become something we want to collect.

We explore how titanium became shorthand for minimalism, permanence, and premium outdoor equipment—and why sometimes the most desirable object is the one with almost nothing left to remove.

Trail running has become obsessed with optimization. Pace, heart rate, elevation, recovery. Even disappearing into the mountains now comes with a dashboard.

San Francisco-based @wear_dust is taking a different approach. Born from long days in the American West, the independent running brand combines technical performance with workwear references, Western influences, and a belief that outdoor clothing should have some personality.

With its first women’s collection, designed alongside Boulder-based trail runner @norawornhoff, Dust is expanding its vision of what running apparel can look like.

Less about chasing numbers. More about getting outside, getting dirty, and enjoying the experience.

Stay Alive.

For years, anyone interested in where outdoor gear meets design knew to look toward Japan. Now, something different is happening next door.

A new generation of Korean brands is blurring the boundaries between hiking, climbing, ultralight equipment, streetwear and everyday life.

From @cayl_official and @hiker_workshop to @jeongli_official, @goyowear.official, @welter_experiment, @somewhereoutside.world, @urbanside.kr and @sansan_gear , technical clothing is becoming less of an outdoor uniform and more of a design language.

When the mountain is already part of the city, there is less reason to dress as though you’re crossing from one world into another.

You simply go outside.

On October 8, WeekEnds presents the global launch night of @houdinisportswear × @demon____official SILVESTRE 26AW in Chengdu.

Following the inaugural “Silvestre” collaborative drop this past March—which sold out within 24 hours—this collection approaches the “wild” not as a romanticized ideal, but as an instinctual state of being: untamed, undefined by pre-charted paths, and constantly open to rekindling our connection with nature.

Emerging from distinct mountain cultures and design traditions, HOUDINI and DEMON converge within a singular product narrative to reconsider how heritage integrates into modern urban life. The dialogue between these two design philosophies poses a shared inquiry:
As urban rhythms increasingly dictate how we move and live, can our bodies still retain their raw sensory instincts when confronted with the unknown?

To explore this, “Silvestre” will not merely sit on static display plinths. Instead, it will be woven into an interplay of sound, light, architecture, and human presence—translating the “untamed” into a tangible, lived encounter.

For the launch night, we have invited sitar virtuoso Boxuan (founder of Nova Heart) and electronic music producer Rev to debut a collaborative Sitar Hybrid Live set. The resonant strings of the ancient sitar will merge with raw, grounded bass frequencies, channeling an intrinsic reverence for nature and awakening the dormant instincts within.

The waves were good. Nicola Morgan wanted to stay. Her skin had other plans.

That problem eventually became @vampiresurfclub — a surfwear brand built around a simple idea: good gear should give you more time outside.

After more than fifteen years in luxury fashion, including Givenchy, Lanvin, and The Row, Morgan brought a different eye to surf equipment. UPF50+ protection, Italian performance fabrics, Japanese neoprene, minimal branding, and silhouettes that make covering up part of the look.

Because when the waves are good, the best piece of gear might simply be the one that gives you another hour.

Nur Abbas @nur_light has spent his career designing inside Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Nike and Yeezy. With @gnuhr_studio, he’s trying something smaller.

For Abbas, ultralight isn’t only about reducing weight. It’s a way of designing: remove what isn’t necessary, question familiar constructions, let utility shape the aesthetic, and leave enough room for strange ideas to survive.

“One of the reasons that I became fascinated with ultralight gear is because I felt like I was seeing more radical ideas coming out of that community than I was seeing from fashion.”

On the latest WeekEnds WeekDays, Nur joins Derek and Mateo to talk about genuine innovation vs. novelty, designing from first principles, making hardware in-house, why small studios can take bigger creative risks, and whether designers actually create ideas—or simply discover them.

“It’s almost like mining. If you keep digging, you keep going, you’re going to find something eventually.”

Before surfwear became a global lifestyle category, it was a lot weirder.

Designers like Jack Denny moved from Gotcha and MCD into World Jungle, while Dave Patri and the crew behind Split pulled from skateboarding, hip-hop and techno. Surfers like @mattarchbold , @christianfletcherlives, Dino Andino, @sunnygarcia and @andyironsforever weren’t simply sponsored athletes—their personalities helped define what the brands meant. Denny’s path from Gotcha and MCD to founding World Jungle is especially representative of how people and ideas circulated through the scene.

Split, MCD, World Jungle, SMP, Counter Culture, Third Rail and dozens of other labels mixed surfing with graffiti, punk, motocross, workwear and whatever else happened to be around them. The people were the brand guidelines, the surf shop was the algorithm, and discovery still had friction.

Today, a 3 person company can launch with the polish of a fifty-year-old institution. The tools are better than ever, but something gets lost when a brand looks finished before it has had time to become anything.

What once looked amateur now looks human. What once looked inconsistent now feels specific. Thirty years later, vintage dealers and collectors are rebuilding an archive the industry never thought to preserve—and reminding us why the clothes still feel so specific, so hard to reproduce an era of AI and digital reproduction.

When Surf Brands Were Weird, now on WeekEnds.

What happens when a climbing brand doesn’t really care whether you call it an outdoor brand?

On WeekEnds WeekDays, @saturnlosangeles founder @rcheungus joins us to talk about building a brand at the intersection of climbing, LA streetwear, Asian fashion and technical design.

“Saturn evolves as I evolve as a person.”

From starting as a skate brand at 17 to finding climbing, looking to China for what comes next, and figuring out how independent brands can turn local identity into global relevance, Saturn offers a different model for the future of outdoor clothing.

The most interesting outdoor brands may be the ones still figuring out what an outdoor brand can be.

The people shaping the next outdoors aren’t all working inside the industry’s biggest design departments.

They’re engineers building packs around problems they encounter in the mountains. Fashion designers reconsidering what technical clothing can look like. Makers experimenting with hemp and ultralight materials. Editors deciding what deserves attention. Community builders designing new ways for people to get outside.

From @nur_light of @gnuhr_studio, @kyle.siegel of @raide.research, Keita Ikeuchi and Mihoko Mori of @andwander_official, @kaname_nagaoka of @south2_west8_official, @cayl_lee of @cayl_official, @yoffffff of @sansan_gear, @caizhudaizo of @somewhereoutside.world, Pietro Fareri and @yurikaban of @rayonvert.international, @danelewiswatson of @goodlids, @bricepartouche of @satisfyrunning, @tomtomdaly and @vallot of @districtvision, @waitsui of @hikingpatrol, @grahamisonline of @fieldmag, and @michaelwashh of @usal.project, a new generation is expanding what it means to be an outdoor designer.

They aren’t moving toward one aesthetic. They’re multiplying the number of directions available.
