A family-friendly stack to welcome cozy season 🎃
I know many will take great exception to no Hocus Pocus, but I saw it as an adult, so I don't have that warm, cozy nostalgia for it. I wish I did.

I DID somehow have the Olson Twins Halloween special, though, so I guess that is my Hocus Pocus.

@_ghostguts tag for a red/black stack. I decided to make it action themed because these are amazing, and that is all there really is to it. Well, maybe not Eye, but it is in the picture, and it's too late now.

*I know I am wearing a Commando shirt when it isn't in the stack, but I couldn't find that tape in the moment. I definitely have Terminator and Die Hard shirts, but this one felt right 💪

Stephen King stack for his birthday 👑

As someone with a taste for horror fiction from a young age, Kings books were always this tempting pile of magic that I couldn't wait to get to. None were in the elementary school library, but I would sneak pages at the public one as a kid, desperately wanting to see what all the fuss was about. My first read was Pet Sematary, and I quickly understood why he was a household name.

King is SUCH a major part of the cultural zeitgeist because his influence goes beyond his books. He has been writing for over 50 freaking years with no end in sight. We have countless adaptions, and he made characters and images like Pennywise, Jack Torrance, Carrie, etc, recognizable even to people who never read or watched any of it.

Obviously, he is known for the spooky but he has many works that delve into universal fears and experiences. Childhood, coming of age, family drama, addiction, loneliness, guilt, loss, and mortality are some, often set in middle-class America. I personally love his short stories; real mastery at work and cannot pick a favorite film adaption!

I must note his insane productivity, even in his sober years!

New generations constantly encounter King through books, movies, television, and references made by other writers and filmmakers. All of that typing away has influenced the way modern horror and popular storytelling are written and certainly inspired a lot of my imagination and hopes for writing one day.

King has become a cultural touchstone whose stories and characters have shaped how generations understand and experience not just horror but the human experience.

The hilight of Horror Hound was meeting the indisputable Queen of Gothic Horror, the beautiful Barbara Steele!
She was a late announcement, and I was beyond thrilled to be able to meet this legend who has graced many of my favorite films. Graced but also haunted because no one can hold a candle to her innocence that can quickly turn menacing. I tried (!) per Black Sunday, a Bava masterpiece.

She ended up changing her schedule, so we adjusted our weekend quickly to be able to snag her before she left. And I am so grateful! She was so kind as I told her how happy I was to tell her face to face how much I love her films.

If you have not seen her in action, do yourself a favor! You have many options and good luck not becoming entranced. Next time, I will perfect the mask punctures because she makes that evil witch life look so good!

I am bloody excited show off the 30 DAYS OF NIGHT steelbook from @iconfilm where I wrote one of the essays in the badass accompanying booklet! ❄️

I focus on how 30 DAYS brought vicious vampires back, baby. No offense to Twilight and Vampire Diaries (well, maybe a little), but it was absolutely thrilling when this film stormed on the scene in 2007 with its bloodthirsty but intelligent beasts, no romantic immortals in sight.

Scoop up your copy today because the film quality is amazing, as are the special features... shout out to @chris_alexander_films tasty and excellent visual essay 🩸 and @suspirialand beautifully perfect art.

After decorating for Halloween yesterday, I reflected on what brought me down this dusty road of loving spooky stuff so much. For me, it was books and the images on the covers because often, the inspiration they gave me was more powerful than the story itself. I would create my own version of the tale, and that would have lingering effects. I still find ventriloquist dummies terrifying and wonder what happened to the "monster blood" I tried to cook up 😅

Goosebumps by @rl_stine1 was a critical stepping stone in securing my love for things that go bump in the night. I recall reading Welcome to Dead House in the 3rd grade after being captured by the cover and was sufficiently creeped out. Thus started my chasing the thrill of being scared but at a safe distance.

The Haunted Mask movie gave me nightmares in the 4th grade, but nevertheless, I persisted in consuming them like forbidden snacks. Speaking of forbidden, my taste for stronger stuff only increased, and soon Fear Street and Christopher Pike novels were on the menu much to the strict school librarians chagrin. I will save that for another post!

In the meantime, I casually collect the old editions from my youth (they need to be put into order eek) and thank @timjacobus for capturing the imaginations of myself and so many others. I am a diehard for horror novel covers to this day and thank true artists like Tim in putting forth their magic to the world.

My love for Tim started before I knew what being captivated by someone was. My brother and I would rent Pebble and the Penguin from Blockbuster repeatedly. The booming voice from Drake, the giant penguin, could not be ignored. For my 10th birthday, I wanted ONLY Muppet Treasure Island on tape, which I got and nearly wore out (I now have a few copies just in case).
The Worst Witch popped up on TV around Halloween, and I started getting a sense of how magnetic this shape-shifter could be. And the voice on him!
At Christmas, he was there getting Catherine's (😢) iconic slap. Then there was Legend, another world, a reminder Tim could disappear into a character. And that laugh!
In high school, I discovered RHPS. It was one of the most impressionable movies I had ever seen and became a lifelong obsession. I watched it after prom and have seen many screenings and productions since, of course, all dressed up.
Clue snuck in as a comfort movie because of the absolute hilarity and joy it brings. I firmly believe no one can fill his clown shoes or be a better Nigel Thornberry.
There are not many actors who were a part of my childhood, adolescence, and adulthood in such a personal way. He brought absolute magic into the world, and we won't ever forget it.

*the Rocky Horror soundtrack is not on here, sadly. Otherwise would be playing I'm Going Home ❤️

SEQUEL STACK ✌️ I am definitely missing some big guns that I probably have on DVD somewhere or need to track down. But Lawnmower Man 2 is included, so what else do I really need?
