Here are some fantastic photos of 'Backbone' taken by @recompo.se

Caught me on a rainy afternoon, one of the first in months. Perfect day for reminiscing on cutting about in the muddy glen.

‘Backbone’ is a conceptual sculpture, made from carved charred beech and scrap metal tools, standing at over 8ft tall. It was made as part of the @neverendingglen residency, ahead of Kelburn Garden Party this summer. It is a permanent sculpture, installed on the Kelburn Estate, Largs, Responding to the theme of hidden connections. With this piece, I intend to prompt viewers to reflect on our relationship with the ecosystem that we are a part of. The inspiration for the sculpture came from a hollow tree, situated 15 meters from the sculpture.

This sculpture invites the audience to reconnect and feel the delicate balance of life surrounding us, That we have become so divorced from. Nature is our backbone and through industrial processes, pollution, extinction of apex predators and exploitative farming and land management practices, we have damaged the natural balance, and are now faced with problems such as unnatural global warming and threat of mass extinction.

The burn of the sculpture symbolises the destruction we have caused. The tools symbolise neglected but valuable manual processes and a closer, hands-on relationship with the environment.

The carved beech is from the forest at Kelburn and as the sculpture decays, it will feed the future forest in years to come. Situated in a natural woodland in Scotland, the sculpture reflects on the historic highland clearances.

‘Backbone’ is installed on the north path of the glen. Go and say hello!

Backbone

An unfinished sculpture, reflecting on our relationship with the ecosystem that we have neglected. Decay is natural and should feed future life. Through industrial processes, and technological evolution over the last century, waste has become harmful to our woodlands, our seas, and all wildlife.

This sculpture has been made with wood from the forrest on the Kelburn estate, where it will be installed late june ready for their festival. It will be left to decay alongside a dead tree, and will feed the future forest.

I have become hyperfixated on too many things this week, one of them being balancing things on top of eachother. I love the feeling i get from the aggressive form and textures which i am surrounded by. Complete chaos through a mass of clutter creating bulk.

With the first week of the @neverendingglen residency coming to a close i am excited to move my fixations towards more permanent bodies of work, in the run up to install week in june.

Update! My functional woodburning stove ‘Bride’ is finally finished. A whole lot later than planned as i have been struggling with motivation this winter, however i am excited to begin a new project.

The bike chain mechanism controls the air intake to the burner. Once lit, the flame should create a vortex motion, like that of a hurricane. I am excited to update you once it is in place in my house and alive.

A depiction of Cernunnos, the Celtic horned god. The god of nature and all things wild. When the Romans invaded mainland Britain (43AD), they introduced patriarchy and Christianity. This new religion that was quickly adopted in populated areas on the island. However, rural places clung to Celtic traditions and languages. The Catholic Church was frightened by the influence that Cernunnos had over the Pagans, which is why the anti-christ is depicted with horns and is said to be the father of lies. As the church continued to make efforts to assert authority and standardise practices that differed from Celtic traditions, the Celts declined in followers.

Over the last 3 years, many of my drawings and sculptural work (including whacky hats) have been created, sub-consciously, with horns. Reflecting now, I am thinking about my lifestyle and interests, and I am curious as to how, for the last couple of years, have I been depicting a god that I have only just become familiar with.

My depiction of Cernunnos is made up of 32 separate rounds of various types of wood, in which have created the head and shoulders of the god. The antlers are created from separate, thinner branches in which I wedged in with off-cuts of the rounds, that I squared off. I aimed to build a depiction of this god that has been neglected over time, which is partly why I chose individual rounds. The other reason, is that all this wood was locally sourced, from fallen trees in the gardens around the Falmouth campus. I have brought different species of local wood together, to create this six and a half foot god of nature.

It has been ten weeks of non-stop work, and the sculpture has seen me and my best and worse. Thank you to the team at @falmouth.technical.facilities for all your guidance and dedication to my ambitions.

Open 8th-10th and 13th-14th of may
