OPENING EVENT ‘IN TRANSLATION’

I’m very pleased to be part of Jacqueline Poncelet’s exhibition In Translation, opening this Sunday at MOCA London.

The exhibition brings together Jacqueline’s original watercolour and In Translation (01), the tapestry I created in collaboration with Jacqueline, exploring what happens when an image moves from one medium into another.

It has been a fascinating process of looking closely at Jacqueline’s work and finding a way to translate it into tapestry - not simply reproducing the image, but responding to it through colour, structure, yarn and the physical act of weaving.

The exhibition will also include a new installation of ‘Other Cosmologies’, with Jacqueline’s 2026 watercolours printed onto vinyl and installed across the gallery walls.

Last week marked a special moment as we cut the Jacqueline Poncelet tapestry from the loom.

Working with Jacqueline over the past year has been a wonderful experience.

Bringing her watercolour into tapestry form has been an inspiring and rewarding process, and a real privilege for our studio.

We can’t wait to reveal the finished piece soon.

On view at Collect Art Fair with Cavaliero Finn Gallery - Somerset House.

The tapestry is constructed on a cotton warp using specially spun worsted wool, dyed and prepared in my garden studio in West Sussex.
As I work, I sit between the forming structure and Barlavington Hanger behind the loom. The landscape informs the conditions of making — duration, pace and restraint — rather than imagery.
The work develops within this fixed orientation.

Delighted to have reached 100cm today on our project with @jacponcelet

The total height of the piece is 126cm. Not long now!
The work has offered us a fabulous opportunity to mix very subtle colours together to create the transparency so beautifully developed in the original watercolour.

Weaving from this week on our project with @jacponcelet
I learn something new every day - my challenge this week has been patience. Waiting for hints of stronger colours to appear, and holding on to soft merging edges for just long enough.
I liked this shot, of all the mixes of yarn defusing the view. This is my view most days. by @weftfaced
