![Growing up, the story I heard about Chang'e was that she married Hou Yi when he was a hero, but he became a cruel lazy drunkard who became increasingly obsessed with power and immortality. More recently, I've heard a version of the story where an apprentice broke into their house and tried to steal their elixir of immortality, and so Chang'e consumed it in an effort to keep it away from the wrong hands. [I like this one better!]
As a child, the most visually (at least mentally) memorable part of the story was the description of how her running steps grew light, then weightless, then ceased to touch the ground at all - and how she effortlessly glided towards the moon with her long garments trailing behind her. The words I remember hearing in chinese were "ι£ι£θ©θ©" which I guess mean "flutter" according to Google Translate but there's more grace in the word "ι£" than I think 'flutter' offers. Indeed, the mental image I have was much closer to the way fabric moves underwater - no flapping, all grace and glide.
I literally used to play Chang'e in the bathtub with a bunch of washcloths. To be able to roleplay this underwater as an adult was truly mindblowing! (also: damn i'm glad i never hemmed my hanfu, behold its glorious 8 foot train, haha)
