Algorithmic Music und Live Coding 🎛️

shindig ist eine Veranstaltungsreihe mit Fokus auf experimentelle Post-Internet-Musik und zugleich ein Raum für Lernen und Austausch.

Die fünfte Ausgabe von shindig lädt TOPLAP Karlsruhe ein: Eine Initiative, die sich mit Live-Coding in elektronischer Musik und Video beschäftigt.
TOPLAP steht für Transdimensional Organisation for the Purity of Live Artistic Programming. Die Initiative wurde 2004 ins Leben gerufen und hat sich seitdem zu einem globalen Netzwerk entwickelt.

Im Projektraum könnt ihr am 21. Februar den Live-Codern beim Programmieren und Improvisieren von Musik und Visuals zusehen und zuhören – alle Code-Manipulationen und -Kreationen werden projiziert und angezeigt.

Es werden tagsüber zwei Workshops angeboten, die sich mit den Open-Source-Live-Coding-Plattformen Strudel und SuperCollider befassen.

①SuperCollider Workshop: 13-15:00
w/ @adrianreich.ardt
SuperCollider is a platform for audio synthesis and algorithmic composition, used by musicians, artists and researchers working with sound.
In this workshop, we will take our first steps into the programming language and experiment with creating our own sounds and instruments, possibly resulting in a collaborative sound collage piece that will be played during the performances in Part II.
We will discuss different beginner-friendly approaches to programming music, listen to examples, and explore the many possibilities of algorithmic composition.
No programming, music production or composition experience is required. Please bring a laptop, a pair of headphones and a curiosity for electronic music.

②Strudel Workshop: 15:30-17:30
w/ Felix Roos & Tobias Hecker
Based on tidalcycles, strudel emerged as a livecoding language to be used immediately in your browser – no installation needed. With a wide range of instruments and functions, sound / jams / music can be arranged or improvised on the fly, also in collaboration with others.

With experience, coding in strudel can generate material spontaneously and fast-paced which makes it interesting not only as a standalone-app but also in conjunction with any other instrument like guitars, bass, percussion, keys ...

Possible contents of the workshop are writing riffs, basslines, ambient pads and arps, breakbeat sample treatment, building jazz chords, sound design, layering, effects and filters, drum programming, acid sounds, arrangement and jamming together over a shared livecoding space.

No previous programming experience needed! Please bring a laptop and a pair of headphones.

a glimpse into the line-up for shindig#5 on the 21.02. 👀 🫶

slide 1:
úā aka Jia Liu describes herself as a recursive commuter driver between the formal and the sensual. Based in Karlsruhe and active in Europe as a composer, computer‑music performer, and researcher, her interests lie in sound, its algorithmic formation and deformation, communication between systems, and temporal topology.

slide 2:
Mot4i, is a French artist based in Berlin, blending pop, ambient, post-rock shoegaze, and experimental electronic music through biosonification and DIY electronics. After 18 years in the alternative scene, he’s recently been exploring experimental music through live coding. Driven by an intense inner quest, his work moves between dreamlike atmospheres, tension, and a subtle melancholy.

Johannes Ziervogel works with sonic states situated between drone, musique concrète and techno. His practice centres on the bodily impact of sound, shaped through density, pressure, spatiality and continuous textural change. Distortion, noise, glitch and field recordings form the sonic material used to create immersion, overload and energy. His live coding debut marks a new mode of performance within this practice.

Haelmo is a live-coding duo formed in February 2024 in Karlsruhe.
In Haelmo’s performances, visuals and sound merge into one - somewhere between rolling beats,
Hydra feedback, and club mayhem.

performer / sound artist. in between club and academia. drifting,
hybrid, algorithmic sound, improvised structures, unstable rhythms.

jan Ten (jT) is a live coder writing and manipulating code in real time to create music, using the tools ORCA and Kabelsalat. Since around 2020, jT has been experimenting with different live coding techniques and has performed several times as part of TOPLAP Karlsruhe. jT’s style moves between minimal acid and drum’n’bass, focusing on deep grooves and evolving structures. jT is drawn to slow movements and constant transformation, music that grows into hypnotic and immersive soundscapes.

hi friends, here we go again !! 🫶🫶
The fifth installment of shindig invites TOPLAP Karlsruhe (@toplap_ka), a collective working with live-coding in electronic music and video. TOPLAP can be an acronym for Transdimensional Organisation for the Purity of Live Artistic Programming. First formulated in 2004, the initiative has since developed into a global network of like-minded artists.
At Projektraum Kunstverein Wagenhalle (@kunstvereinwagenhalle), you’ll be able to watch and listen as the live-coders program and improvise music and visuals—all code manipulation and creation is projected and displayed. For the curious to dive deeper, two workshops will also be offered, focusing on the open-source live-coding platforms strudel and SuperCollider.
The first workshop starts at 1pm, the second at 3:30pm. There will be limited capacity. To sign up for the workshops, send an email at: shindig.kontakt@gmail.com

Hallo, dieses Wochenende (Sa, 11.10.) finden im Projektraum des @kunstvereinwagenhalle sehr gute Konzerte statt. Ich hab mit @weiny__f zusammen die Bands und Acts zusammengestellt und das Plakat gestaltet :)

Ich freu mich auf @gewalt_band, @tellavision_official, @duft.offiziell, @svumato und auf die Projektionen/visuals/Kunst von @airport_kid und dann zum Abschluss noch auf @oliviaousman und @sim17k

Der Eintritt ist frei.

Es sind auch die Tage der Offenen Ateliers an der Wagenhalle und ich zeige in meinem Raum (Neubau) nachmittags (11.10 & 12.10.) ein paar USA Bilder, einen Katalog und es gibt Cremant.

Ich freu mich, wenn ihr vorbeikommt und bringt gern viele Menschen mit.
