🎵 For this week’s Song of the Week, we’re revisiting Alex Weiser’s Fate Defied, performed by mezzo-soprano Kristin Gornstein and pianist Jeremy Chan.

As we prepare the initial release of the BASS Art Song Database, we’re sharing a preview from our Listening Guides:

This final song carries the simplicity of a pop tune. Weiser highlights words that are colors by setting them as the highest notes of each phrase. The final line is repeated multiple times, gradually fading in volume, an effect familiar from pop songs like The Beatles’ Hey Jude. The result is a song that never seems to truly end, but instead slips out of focus and continues into eternity. It’s a technique with an art song precedent, too: Schubert creates a similar effect at the end of Die schöne Müllerin.

Hear Kristin and Jeremy back at BASS on Valentine’s Day, February 14 at 5PM, for Passions V: Cabaret Night, an intimate evening celebrating the wit, sophistication, and emotional candor of the cabaret tradition.

Grateful for a wonderful day in Greensboro, North Carolina to hear the incredible @julianschwarzcellist and friends at the Eastern Festival of Music perform the world premiere of a Cello + String Quartet re-working on my “Airs of Awe and Affection” (original contrabass version premiere coming soon!) — a very personal work I wrote after Elias was born reflecting on fatherhood and my hopes and dreams for my beautiful little boy. It was an honor and a pleasure to share this piece with an incredible, warm community, especially in collaboration with Julian — also a (relatively) new father to a beautiful little boy. by @weisera
