The IBPSA-USA UPenn Chapter is excited to host Prof.Ariane Middel, Lab Director and Associate Professor at The GAME School, Arizona State University, for a talk on urban heat.

Designing Cooler Cities: Sensing, Simulating, and Mitigating Heat at the Human Scale

Date: Monday, October 12, 2026
Time: 4:00–5:00 PM EST
Location: Meyerson Hall, Room 3N
Online: Also available on Zoom. Scan QR for registration or link:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScEVvwChWh6YetWkzjmz2Weivvm3yNPcZtcIUMGjMkAuTM4KQ/viewform?usp=header

About the talk:
Extreme heat affects human health, performance, and well-being. This lecture highlights heat-mitigation strategies from the SHaDE Lab at ASU, focusing on trees, engineered shade, and cool pavements. Field measurements, including the MaRTy and ANDI instruments, microclimate simulations, and real-world experiments are used to evaluate interventions before implementation. Together, these approaches connect urban form, materials, vegetation, local climate, and human thermal response to support cooler, healthier public spaces. Whether you work in building performance simulation, urban design, landscape, planning, or public health, we’d love to see you there.

Today, our EBD students visited Princeton University to explore how campus-scale energy infrastructure can support a more sustainable built environment.

A major focus of the visit was the Tiger Energy Plant, where we learned how Princeton manages and distributes energy across campus. We also explored the university’s geothermal borehole system, gaining a closer look at how ground-source heat exchange can be integrated into a larger campus heating and cooling network.

From there, we visited the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment, where architecture, environmental performance, and energy research come together.

We ended the visit at the CHAOS Lab, where we saw ongoing research and design explorations related to energy and the built environment.

Led by Prof.Braham @brahamwww ,Prof.Aviv @thermal_architecture_lab with TA zhan shi @zhanshi.arch

Many thanks to Professor Forrest for guiding us through the visit and sharing his insights into Princeton’s energy systems and research. @chaos_of_forrest

A great opportunity to connect what we study in class with real infrastructure operating at the campus scale!

Fall semester is underway and our first year students are getting started with required course : ARCH 7520 Fundamentals of Bioclimatic Design.
As their first assignment, they conducted a series of tests to modify the climate of different spaces within their apartment. They tracked real-time temperature and humidity patterns across these spaces, learning the relationship between them.

Congratulations to Director of the MSD-EBD Program and Andrew Gordon Professor of Architecture Bill Braham, on winning the 2025-2026 Tulane Prize for Climate Change Curriculum in the Built Environment: Environmental Building Design.

Bill won the Tulane Prize for his course ARCH 7520 Fundamentals of Bioclimatic Design. This class is grounded in the classic, mid-century practices that emphasize the “passive” properties of the building envelope, of the ability of the walls, windows, and thermal mass of the building to modulate the interior climate. We also enhance and extend those practices by adapting smarter technologies, which can leverage more environmental resources to make buildings comfortable, healthy, and energy efficient. It combines principles of biology, climatology, and building science empowering architects to develop new forms of building that improve habitability. The course begins with structured exercises using analytical tools and techniques which are then developed in case studies of exemplary bioclimatic buildings.

The Tulane Center on Climate Change and Urbanism awards this prize annually to faculty members who demonstrate excellence in the development of core and elective curriculum in climate change and the built environment. The selected awardees and honorees represent benchmark contributions for their work in developing cutting-edge curriculum relating to climate change mitigation and adaptation in the training of future urban planners, architects, landscape architects, urban designers, and other allied professions of the built environment.

Name: Adithi Garood
Hometown: Bengaluru, Karnataka, India
Program: Master in Environmental Building Design (MEBD)

Meet Adithi Garood, a Master in Environmental Building Design student at the Weitzman School of Design. Focused on sustainability, research, and material innovation, Adithi explores how design can respond to environmental challenges while staying grounded in context and culture. Here is how she reflects on her journey at Weitzman:

Why did you choose Weitzman?
The EBD program blends design and research in the sustainable built environment. I was drawn to its focus on innovative, real-world strategies and its culture of critical discussion and forward-thinking work guided by experts.

How has your background shaped the way you approach design?
Coming from India, my approach is rooted in context and culture. Growing up shaped my focus on sensory experience, while living in Bengaluru highlighted integrated planning, environmental awareness, and adaptability.

What project or experience at Weitzman confirmed that you’re on the right path?
Travel Week to San Francisco and UC Berkeley connected studio ideas to real-world practice through alumni projects and lectures by industry professionals.

Is there a project that reshaped the way you think about design?
A biomaterials elective (Dumo Lab) reframed materials as tools for sustainability rather than just aesthetics.

How has Weitzman prepared you for your future career?
It builds technical skills and critical thinking, encouraging more holistic and realistic design solutions.

What is one tip to help make the transition into graduate school?
Have a clear purpose. If unsure, professors are approachable and supportive.

How do you hope your work will impact the future?
I hope my work improves both people’s lives and the environment.

Last week, the Bioclimatic Studio traveled to San Francisco and Berkeley to explore climate-responsive design in action.

Students toured the Center for the Built Environment’s testing chambers, joined lectures on thermal comfort, indoor environmental quality, and sensory architecture, and visited the Berkeley Wood Lab to learn about mass timber and circular construction. They also explored the David Brower Center’s building systems—from radiant cooling to recycled water strategies.

In San Francisco, the group met Penn alumni and toured the Salesforce Transit Center, its rooftop park, Golden Gate Park, and more.

Led by Prof. Aviv @thermal_architecture_lab with TA Jiyoon Bae @baejiyoon.

Grateful to all who shared their time, research, and insight with our students.
