4A CHAMPION // We’re excited to welcome WeiZen Ho as a 4A Champion, as we mark 4A’s 30th anniversary celebrations! WeiZen Ho (@weizenho) is a performing artist and performance deviser whose practice moves between performance, ritual and installation. Since 1999, she has developed participatory and durational works exploring the relationship between body, memory and materiality. Her works create immersive environments shaped by traces, movement and collective experience, drawing from vocal bodywork, improvisation and long-term research into embodied practice. WeiZen’s relationship with 4A began in 2022 when she devised the 4th iteration of a structured-improvisatory group performance, ‘Performature : Performateur 4 (P:P 4)’ as part of 4A/24. In 2024, during the ‘YEAR OF THE DRAGON [龙年]’, WeiZen presented ‘Amulet Body’, a mixed-media installation on deconstructed divination systems, with performances which extended from the gallery into the streets of Haymarket. For ‘An Offering, A Burning, A Prayer’ in 2026, she returned with ‘material : brick ~ material : body’, a performance-installation which repurposed bricks salvaged from 4A’s recent renovation. ”4A’s working culture acknowledges that failures and iterations are integral to realising ambitious concepts; a crucial site for nurturing the development of Asian artists in Australia.“ WeiZen said. The 4A Champion Circle brings together artists, alumni and supporters who have helped shape 4A over the past three decades. It’s about legacy, visibility and supporting what comes next. We’re proud to have WeiZen as part of the 4A Champion Circle💫 📷1,2,5,6: WeiZen Ho, ‘material : brick ~ material : body’ (performance view), 2026. 🔥 THE BURNING // Finale of ‘material : brick ~ material : body’ On 16 May, performance artist WeiZen Ho (@weizenho) performed the final act of her celebrated installation and performance art ‘material : brick ~ material : body’, an installation that was one of the works featured in 4A’s exhibition ‘An Offering, A Burning, A Prayer’, which was shown in February to March 2026. The artist invited some audience members who attended her performance at 4A, along with 4A curator Con Gerakaris (@c.gerakaris), to join her for the final ritual act at her backyard in Katoomba. They wrapped the remaining bricks in ‘kim-choa’ or ancestral offering papers, and placed them in a firepit to be burned. This rite took place outside the gallery setting, in a natural New South Wales landscape of trees, wind and nature. The burning symbolises material transformation and volatility, returning the paper offerings and bricks to a different cycle; both an end and a change. For more details and images from ‘An Offering, A Burning, A Prayer’ and ‘material : brick ~ material : body’, please visit the 4A website. ITERATIVE PERFORMANCES // material : brick ~ material : body 🔔 Join us every Saturday at 2pm for WeiZen Ho (@weizenho)’s deconstructed ritual-making actions, unfolding throughout the galleries and in public space. ‘material : brick ~ material : body (2026)’ is a newly commissioned site-specific installation and iterative performance artwork using heritage building materials salvaged from 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art’s recent demolition and renovation work. Guided through intuition, this work is underscored by an innate intrasensory feeling. WeiZen Ho (@weizenho) reconfigures these historical objects, initiating them as collaborators in her improvisational performances throughout the duration of the exhibition. Each Saturday afternoon, a brick is chosen and carefully wrapped in kim-chóa (a type of joss paper), transforming them into objects of attention and potential devotion. After the exhibition, the resulting devotions will be taken to Ho’s home on Dharug lands🌿, where one final act will be completed in a firepit, in a landscape of trees, wind and personal caretaking. This ritual offering returns her material to the elemental cycle, both an ending and a rebirth. Performance 🗓 Every Saturday, until 29 March 🕐 2pm – 3pm 🎟 Free entry Exhibition 🗓 13 February – 29 March 2026 🕐 Wednesday to Sunday, 11am – 5pm 🎟 Free entry #4Acentre #AnOfferingABurningAPrayer #YearOfTheFireHorse #LunarNewYear #SydneyArt #sydneyevents by @weizenho

OPENING NIGHT // Join us for Opening Night Celebrations! 🎉 Celebrate Lunar New Year with us on Friday 13 February, 6–8pm, as 4A welcomes the Year of the Fire Horse with the opening night of a major exhibition in 4A’s newly renovated space. The Year of the Fire Horse marks a time of new beginnings, clearer direction and renewed momentum. The exhibition, titled ‘An Offering, A Burning, A Prayer’ centres on moments of letting go and renewal, focusing on quiet, healing transitions that carry us from one cycle into the next. Bringing together Asian Australian and Asian artists, the exhibition moves between family, memory and care. Through newly commissioned works alongside key recent pieces, it unfolds across video, installation, sculpture and material based practices. Drawing on ritual, fire and acts of offering, the works approach transformation as something lived and felt, grounded in remembrance, care and the decision to keep moving forward. The opening night will feature a DJ set by Maggie Tra (@mtra), carrying the night into a shared celebration.
