Online workshop! Photo-Poetics: Writing With and Against The ImageWhat do images reveal and what do they withhold? How might poetry and hybrid forms allow us to move beyond the surface of the seen to help shape the way we make meaning about works of art—whether our own, or others? This generative workshop—designed for visual artists, writers, and curators—explores how photographs, in particular, can act as catalysts for imagination and how words, in return, help us look anew.Each week will focus on a single contemporary writer’s work that engages explicitly with photography, contextualizing these projects within a single photographic concept—the caption, the negative, the subject, the frame, and the archive. We will read work by Robin Coste Lewis, Diana Khoi Nguyen, Nick Martino, Natasha Trethewey, and Anne Carson. A short lecture that brings together art, history, and philosophy will open each session, bringing context to the work and ideas, before opening into group conversation about the text. Together, we will explore the formal, conceptual, and aesthetic choices that these writers make— including the use of fragmentation, erasure, persona, formal experimentation, annotations, and archival materials—as they write with and against photographs. Each session will include time for writing and reflection with the offering of a series of guided exercises that invite participants to surface hidden narratives, animate the gaps in memories and archives, and experiment with form and voice. Together, we’ll think across the threshold between word and image, and imagine new ways of making and seeing.Aug 4: Caption We will read Robin Coste Lewis and explore annotation, text-image relations, and their disruption.Aug 11: Negative We will read Diana Khoi Nguyen and consider erasure, inversion, and the conditions of absence.Aug 18: Subject We will read Natasha Trethewey and reflect on persona, power, and the politics of the gaze.Aug 25: Frame We will read Nick Martino and discuss boundaries and composition, inclusion and exclusion.Sept 1: ArchiveWe will read Anne Carson and think about accretion, association, assemblage, and the afterlife of objects. by @welcometothesalon

Get your spot now!CREATING BEYOND CONVENTION Our creativity is central to who we are. It is not only an expression of our individuality, it is also the way we vitalize our essence and grow our connection to the world. Since life is not static, our creativity must likewise stay in a dynamic state of emergence. At times, however, we might find ourselves working in rigid, programmatic ways. Using a clear and relatable approach, Creating Beyond Convention, is designed to give each participant a practical set of tools to either enliven the path they are already on or to launch off in an exciting new direction. Participants will be introduced to a variety of contemporary artists, photographers, writers, filmmakers and musicians in order to examine the ideas, methods and strategies they use to advance their work in unconventional directions. The goal of this workshop is to develop out-of-the-box creative approaches that act as powerful accelerators in both art and life. Each week will focus on a specific approach and will include a slide presentation, a guided assignment, a group discussion and review of participants’ work. 1. Breaking the Rules (an introduction to the Trickster): John Baldessari, Beat Takeshi, Georges Perec: Identifying and breaking conventions as a form of play. 2. Chance Encounters: Philip-Lorca diCorcia, John Cage, Sophie Calle: Using elements of chance, spontaneity and improvisation in creating work. 3. Variations on a Theme: Claude Monet, Ed Ruscha, Sol Lewitt: Examining the way working in groups and sequences can generate ideas that are greater than the sum of their parts. 4. Mary Ellen will offer insight into the ideas and processes behind the making of the images in Color Anthology, her recent exhibition at @yanceyrichardsongallery . She will also share other bodies of work, including those made at Casa Morandi, Giorgio Morandi’s home and studio in Bologna, and at Karl Lagerfeld’s library housed at his former studio in Paris. Member of The Salon, Daniela Guerrero was born and raised in Venezuela and lives with her children in Asheville, North Carlolina. Her extraordinary work, made at home and in the landscape, explores themes of impermanence, resilience, and becoming. She uses all mediums—film, digital—and formats, from 35mm to 4x5. These pictures, recently made with a borrowed Leica—Daniela’s first time using the camera—show her ability to see the ordinary and transform it into visual poetry. Daniela is an artist in her bones. We are fortunate to have her as a long-time member of The Salon. Not only does she inspire us with the photographs she makes, but also with her humble, wise, generous insights into what we read and look at together. Introducing member of The Salon, Roberta Trentin. Roberta is a multidisciplinary artist who creates in collaboration with materials and unknown outcomes. Her work explores overlooked stories of fungi and plants in the more-than-human world. With a background in science, interdisciplinary arts, and photography, and a love of the earth, Roberta weaves macro/micro-observations and deeply personal stories into two- and three-dimensional works of art.Recently, Roberta has been experimenting with mushroom paper. She uses it to create sculptural assemblages that speak about life flows and entanglement. She also draws, makes cyanotypes, photographs, and origami.Roberta has an MFA from the University of Hartford. She lives in Brooklyn, where she also has a studio.
