I'll never tell if I jumped a fence to get these photos.

This year in @nodear_mag silent auction, I was lucky enough to win a Photoplay with @8planetsincancer. I've been getting more into #35mm film photography recently, so it was fun to collaborate and be on the other side of the camera. I'd love to do more of this kind of thing, and get back into acting, too. (If you want someone to take an extremely small part extremely seriously, call your girl.)

The word "play" has been important to me creatively, since I have a tendency to take things a little too seriously. So I appreciate the concept of photoplay, and Montana's generosity in sharing her art and her eye with me.

Thanks to aunt Becky for sending me family photos for inspiration, and to my husband Gregory for sending me art photos for inspiration (always). by @welhouse

Second year continuing my new tradition of getting flu & covid vaccines while wearing black tie.

My goal is to commit to the bit enough that my neighborhood pharmacy employees say "oh, this lady again."

I like the idea of dressing up to honor all the scientists and researchers who work to keep us healthier. And of course, love to Dolly Parton (I think most people know by now she was a major funder of the Moderna vaccine—in addition to paying a lot of strangers' medical bills).

I used to be incredibly self-conscious about sharing videos of my riding.

I taught horseback riding for 20+ years (and will teach again someday, since I enjoy it). I do think that's part of why—the feeling that no matter how much I've learned over the years, I should be better than I am. (That's never been a helpful thought that has contributed to anyone improving at anything.) Teaching has made me a better rider, though. I hear my own voice in my head when I ride, reminding me to adjust my posture, engage my core, and stretch my toes up. It's an encouraging voice.

One of the best parts of teaching was when a student successfully learned a new skill after initially struggling with it. Witnessing and sharing in their feeling of accomplishment. And even if their first time posting the trot isn't as beautiful as it will be on the thousandth time, beginners are often great at celebrating their wins. I loved seeing students post their early rides online. And they should celebrate! When did it start feeling like something had to be perfectly beyond critique in order to celebrate it?

I believe in being a beginner. Too many adults give up on doing things when they're hard. And most things worth doing are hard.

(This video is from a dressage lesson I took a few years ago. I was self-conscious about it then but re-watching it, I feel tender about the amount of effort that goes into something as simple—but not easy—as a sitting trot. I'm still trying to figure out how to get where I want to go with horses. But as Mr. Bonine, the horse trainer I worked with, used to say: "If you take the time it takes, it takes less time.") by @welhouse

Please join me in wishing @gregorycrosby13 a happy birthday (and week, and month, and year, and life). To celebrate Gregory Day: pet a little dog, read a poem, watch a movie in theatres, find a treasure at Housing Works, and laugh at an extremely silly joke your wife made.

In the Kyrgyz language, "chu" is used as a verbal cue to tell horses to go faster.
