What do we mean when we say that global heath needs reforming?

John-Arne Røttingen is at the World Health Summit in Berlin, calling for practical changes to ensure that scientific progress and the global health architecture deliver for the people who need them most.

The suggested reforms include:

- national health systems that are driven less by institutional demands and more by country needs
- financing that can support government plans
- mechanisms that allow all necessary technologies to be developed at scale

The reforms were laid out in full in a paper published last month in Nature Medicine, co-authored by health leaders from across Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America.

If trust breaks down, so does our ability to face what comes next.

Drawing on the views of more than 140,000 people across 140 countries, the Wellcome Global Monitor 2026 helps us understand where trust is under pressure, challenge our assumptions and identify where action is needed globally and locally.

Understanding trust is only a starting point. The wider challenge is ensuring that people can see and experience the benefits of science in their lives.

ad | Today is World Mental Health Awareness Day and there’s something really important we need to talk about.

This summer was HOT in the UK, and @wellcometrust funded research is indicating that this also affects our mental health. Global warming and mental health aren’t separate issues, and after the year we’ve had I think it’s important that we all learn about the connection between the two so we can protect ourselves and others from future extreme heat.

"It's just like an added extra thing to have to worry about."

Pregnancy during periods of extreme heat can mean more than discomfort. It can mean greater health risks for both mother and baby.

As our climate changes, millions of pregnancies around the world are taking place in hotter conditions.

Watch our video about the Wellcome-funded MAGENTA project @magenta_project_uk in Wales and London, which explores how extreme heat is affecting pregnancy and what health systems can do to help keep women and their babies safe.

How do you protect yourself from extreme heat when your work is outside?

The Global Heat Forum is underway in Bangkok, and protecting vulnerable communities is high on the agenda.

New research from Wellcome grantee Ahn Vu from the National Centre for Social Research shows how climate change is becoming a growing health risk for outdoor workers in Vietnam, including construction workers, motorbike taxi riders, porters and street vendors. By centering workers' experiences and working with policymakers, the research is helping turn evidence into action that protects health in a warming world. by @wellcometrust

Is the climate crisis gender-neutral?

Climate action must leave no one behind. At #PreCOP31, @who called for gender-responsive climate action to protect maternal and newborn health from rising temperature and climate change.

In SloMo, a worry becomes a grey bubble spinning fast. People with paranoia in psychosis learn to slow it down and shrink it.

Sessions are with a therapist, and an app supports people in between.

People with lived experience of paranoia helped design how it looks and feels.

27 Pacific island students took the fight for our climate to the world’s highest court, and secured a historic ruling!

Now their win is driving real change around the world.

In a classroom in Vanuatu in 2019, law students watched rising seas threaten their communities’ homes, health and futures.

So they set out to hold someone accountable, and asked “Could a country be held responsible, under international law, for wrecking the climate?”

They took it to their leaders, then the UN, and finally the International Court of Justice, with scientists, lawyers and communities joining forces along the way.

And in 2025, the court ruled that every country has a legal duty to protect people from climate harm.

Failing to act, or expanding fossil fuels, could even violate people’s basic human rights.

And the push for accountability is only growing.

In France, a court ruled that oil giant TotalEnergies must address the climate risks from its fuel.

And in Japan, hundreds are now taking their government to court over climate inaction.

From a classroom in the Pacific, to a movement reshaping climate action worldwide.

This story features in All Rise!, a new short film funded by @wellcometrust and produced by @openplanetorg showing how science, law and communities like @pisfcc can drive climate action to improve health and save lives, which you can watch now from my bio!

Our global call to action on heat and pregnancy is rooted in science.

This study from The University of Western Australia demonstrates the scientific process behind uncovering the health risks of pregnancy during extreme heat.

We know that extreme heat can lead to poor health outcomes such as still birth and preterm birth. That’s why we’re calling for better WHO guidelines, stronger protections for women in national plans and improved health data.

Extreme heat is already putting pregnancies at risk around the world.

In this speech, Dr Jemilah Mahmood outlines the growing threat to maternal and newborn health and the practical steps leaders can take now:
- stronger heat protections in healthcare
- dedicated WHO guidance
- better data to track impacts.

Mothers and babies cannot wait. The tools exist today. What’s needed now is policy action. by @wellcometrust

A landmark climate ruling from the world’s highest court. What happens next?

All Rise! tells the story behind the landmark International Court of Justice climate ruling, from the Pacific students who worked with scientists, lawyers and communities to spark a global movement.

The ruling affirmed that a clean, healthy and sustainable environment is a fundamental human right.

The story continues in France and Japan, where campaigners are using the opinion to push for greater accountability and stronger action to protect people from climate-related health harms.

Watch the trailer and discover how the ICJ advisory opinion can be used by lawyers to drive real-world climate and health action.

Pre-COP31 begins in Fiji next week and it’s hard to imagine a more fitting place to have this conversation.

Pacific Island nations have long been the moral voice of the climate movement. They are also among the communities living most directly with the impacts of climate change, from rising sea levels to growing health risks.

As Christiana Figueres @cfigueres - Former Executive Secretary of UNFCCC @unclimateechange put it: climate action is not only about technology or targets. It’s about our responsibility to one another and the kind of future we choose to create.

Wellcome are bringing health into these conversations through discussions on extreme heat, pregnancy and
climate-resilient health systems.

The challenge now is to move from recognition to implementation. That means listening to Pacific voices, investing in solutions, and ensuring health is at the centre of climate action. by @wellcometrust
