Dear Barron(The Lil Homies),

I read somewhere that grief is like the ocean. It comes in waves, ebbing and flowing. Sometimes the water is calm, and sometimes it’s overwhelming. All we can do is learn to swim.

In a dark time in my life, you were a light fixture. I was searching for direction while trying to give you all a compass for your own lives. Most of the time I spent with you, I was sad. You made me happy, though. Seeing you free to be a carefree black boy gave me a sense of purpose. The dancing, rapping, and laughing gradually healed my wounds. I was supposed to be helping you all become better men, but truthfully you all made me better.

Over the past year or so, I’ve opened up about my battle with depression. Never for any sympathy or concernment, but for you to know you’re not alone. I’ve failed as a son, brother, professionally, and in my relationships. That tired feeling you had, I know all too well. I keep going for the people I love; I keep going because of you.

You called me coach, but you became a little brother, a nephew, and even like a son to me in many ways. The unofficial motto for the Lil Homies became “Love is the way.” I wish in your last moments, you saw another way because you had so many. I love you, and I miss you.
