Greetings, I’m Nick, the enigmatic presence lurking amidst the brilliant guests on the Garmology podcast. By request, a few words about myself and a glimpse into my world.

At the tender age of 56, I find solace in small-town Norway, where I’m proud father to six and grandfather to three. My daily trade resides within civil engineering and software development, though my passions range widely. Let’s talk tweed, traditional craft and ethical business.

Clothes, to me, are more than just fabric draped over the body; let’s talk of individuality, an art form, and a statement. While fashion for many holds an enchanting spell, I tend to stand as a staunch sceptic in pursuit of a deeper truth.

My quest is rooted in the environmental conscience, seeking those who pour their souls into the craft of garment-making, and the materials they employ, untangling the intricate web of what has gone astray and how we, as conscious consumers, can make more enlightened choices.

Garmology was born from my desire to engage with fascinating individuals, hear their stories, and share my discoveries with the world. To date, this has resulted in over 130 captivating episodes.

Feel free to indulge your curiosity and ask me anything.

«Dress your age!» must be the dumbest rule I see when it comes how we dress. Somehow with age we must remove all fun and creativity from our outfits and hide away. I’m 58 and love to bring some «big unc energy» to the game! 😊

Do you want to age into obscurity?

«The underground resistance had great garms», Penny mentioned this morning, «long-lasting, quality construction, articulated fits that allowed movement. And through this they became iconic styles».
She makes a good point, some lovely food for thought to nibble up. While I cringe at all the earnest influencers plugging the One True Way to ultimate style, or suggesting 5 ways to style oversize underwear, it’s mostly a matter of doing what feels right and good to you. I guess I should do a video saying this…

Investigative journalist and author @tansyhoskins joins this episode of @garmologypodcast to discuss her new book, Charity Shop World.

We get into what really happens inside charity shops, where our discarded clothes go, what you should and shouldn’t donate, why volunteers are often carrying much more of the burden than people realise, and how second hand clothing and textile waste travel the globe in search of a final resting place. Oh, and just why does textile waste appear to be both valuable and a massive problem?

Along the way we talk about fashion waste, fast fashion, textile recycling, community initiatives, school uniform banks, repair cafés, thrift culture, and the surprising long history of second-hand clothing.

It’s occasionally shocking and bleak, yet also fascinating and funny that might permanently change how you think about donating clothes.

💬 What’s the best thing you’ve ever found in a charity shop?

🔁 Share this with someone who loves thrifting, charity shops, vintage clothing, or sustainability.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but my social media these days is saturated with earnest young folks wanting to explain either the finer points of style or how they have just discovered sustainable clothing. I’m here for funny animals, spectacular falls or comics that surgically dissect the political shenanigans.

Still, while I have your attention: I always had issues with jackets of the double-breasted configuration, most specifically the super trad beige Burberry. You’ll have heard me point out his they only look good when worn super oversized on willowy girls. And you will have agreed.
For me, it was a game changer when I realised what a power move it was to wear one open, in the manner of certain species of birds. And then bin the beige and go for a more interesting colour, like olive Ventile.

I’m uncertain where we’re going for outfit posts these days. Are reels the way? Stills? Complex edits or down and dirty? Has the game changed again? I’d love to hear your hot takes. Or even lukewarm opinions really.

In my ongoing quest to make more artsy and satisfying outfit posts, today I’m going for stills. Satisfying for myself, I guess, this many years down the road I feel my «pink stool in the road» concept wasn’t as provocative as it once was.

Following on from yesterday’s Ivy style, today we’re by the riverside hunting the toned trout with a hand-tied fly and a classic fishing rod. No modern tech, just a game of cunning, man vs fish.
In cases like this it’s important to have an impossible number of pockets, a little shade from the sun and an outfit based around earthy, natural tones. The actual fish is optional, unless you’re really keen.

Today’s imagery is inspired by «Ametora», or «aiby style», if you like. I was just re-reading the 2015 book by @wdavidmarx and found myself intrigued by how strange the invention of «Ivy» really was.
Based upon a vague fantasy a style was created by a Japanese clothes entrepreneur, mainly based on an idea of how East Coast elite students dressed. It was then promoted, with rules and examples, by a monthly mens style magazine.
Clearly something that would only work in pre-internet times, in a market that was both closed and hungry for new trends. It slow to take off, as Japanese gents were conditioned to dress soberly, but it did work out, in the end, for a while.

The style evolved through further phases, such as «heavy duty» and «trad», as more knowledge flowed in, more fully documenting classic American style, making diversions into hiking, trapping and sports. Nowadays it’s accepted that Japanese enthusiasts became archivists of the American cast-offs, and made a business of them.

If you’re interested, I talk to David in episode of #108 of @garmologypodcast

PS: After discovering my cabin hair a few weeks back, I’m now fully leaning into my curly phase.

«Rustic adventures in heritage-infested Norwegian valley» or the less histrionic «My weekend of rustic stuff and crazy rain»? Never easy to know which will prove popular with the crowds keen on some hot stave church and creosote action.

Factuals first: Numedal is a valley in Southern Norway. It was kind if it’s own closed little world for the longest time, farming and competing Christian variants. It was opened up when two hydropower plants were built in the early 1900s, which brought in fresh people and modern times.

The stave church is Uvdal stave church, first built in 1168, expanded and changed many times since. It’s part of a fantastic display now with many historic buildings. Heaven for those that enjoy the look and smell of creosoted wood.

Ask away if you’d like more real Norwegian heritage content (sounding like a real creosote content creator)

New episode 🎙️

Solveig, founder of Indigo Indigo, joins Garmology for a wide-ranging conversation about fashion, fabrics, sewing, sustainability, and the surprisingly winding path that led her from photography and fashion magazines to running a fabric and pattern business on Norway’s west coast.

We talk about learning to sew, building a clothing label, sourcing beautiful textiles from Japan and Europe, creating sewing patterns, and why making things yourself changes how you think about clothes.

Along the way, we get into zero-waste design, oversized silhouettes, technical sportswear, fabric waste, sustainability labels, capsule wardrobes, and the psychology of why so many of us buy materials for projects we haven’t even started yet.

It’s thoughtful, inspiring, and full of ideas about how we might reconnect with clothing in a more meaningful way.

💬 If you could learn one traditional craft tomorrow, what would it be?

🔁 Share this with someone who loves textiles, clothing, making things, or simply doing things differently.
