“For many current members of the Wellesley College community, the events of 9-11-2001 might only be something they’ve read about in history books or seen in documentaries on television. But our community lost someone special that day, and her memory greets you every day as you walk onto the pool deck.

Rahma Salie ’96 was a former gymnast who decided to give diving a try when she started at Wellesley. She was always smiling, even after tough practices learning new dives. That smile was contagious and was often accompanied by a joyful laugh, which could be heard by the swimmers across the pool. She was a kind soul, with the biggest heart.

After graduating from Wellesley, Rahma remained in the Boston area for work and to be close to family members who lived nearby. In 1998, she married her husband Micky Theodoridis in nearby Cambridge. On the morning of September 11, 2001, Rahma and Micky boarded American Airlines Flight 11 to attend a wedding in California. They were expecting their first child in November 2001.

In honor of their 20th college reunion in 2016, a group of Rahma’s teammates and friends organized the donation and dedication of the diving dry board and rigging in Rahma’s memory. All current Wellesley swimmers see that equipment each time they are on the pool deck, and the Wellesley divers are lucky enough to train on it. Even if you didn’t know Rahma Salie, her smile can still be felt at the pool every day.” - Kristen Laudadio Ray ’96

“Rahma’s smile….I can still picture it clearly all these years later. She was one of those people who was always positive and upbeat. She was also a hard worker, who embraced the challenge of learning a new sport. Her teammates loved her, and as Kristen noted, we would hear her laugh at the other end of the pool and smile. Rahma brought people together and I found it very fitting that her teammates would want to give something in her memory that was related to, and would help other divers. Every year on 9-11 I am touched to see the remembrances her teammates post. Rahma was a beautiful soul and I hope that today you will take just a minute to smile in her memory.” - Former Swimming & Diving Coach Bonnie Dix by @wellesleyswimdive
