POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

a couple of short ones/ poems!

Stag’s Leap by Sharon Olds - 3/5 ⭐️
these poems relate to the dissolution of her 30-year marriage when her husband leaves her for another woman. Most of the poems are of the pining sort, which left me wondering where was the rage and self-doubt and all the other emotions that surely must come from such a huge upheaval in life. ugh! pain and grief!

Ozone Journal by Peter Baakia - 2/5 ⭐️
a bit nonsensical how these poems were grouped and felt quite fragmented. ahrd for me to connect to any of them

Late Wife by Claudia Emerson - 3/5 ⭐️
very solid collection, and certainly worthy of the Pulitzer it won

A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara

4/5⭐️

well here we go folks. I’ve been pondering and digesting this book for a while. I read it this spring during planting and must I say, what a choice, Maddy. such an intense book with extremely heavy themes whilst working 12+hr days and a draining job. 🌲🦺
if you are looking for an excuse to destroy yourself emotionally....to scream endlessly into the void. Look no further. 😩This is it. like oh my god, so extremely well written but OH SO SAD!!!!!💔

despite my 4 stars, and admiration for this novel, I can not recommend without some very explicit warnings. This novel addresses in an unflinching manner multiple, disturbing instances of sexual abuse and self harm. the story centers on four college friends and the progression of their careers and friendships over 30+ years. there is major focus is on one friend, Jude who is very private about his past. this past, the ever present physical and mental repercussions Jude endures along with the impact his condition has on those who love Jude form the backbone of the story.

Gumboot Girls: Adventure, Love & Survival on British Columbia’s North Coast (Various Authors)

5/5 ⭐️

You know what, YES. I identify as a Gumboot Girl. Although these stories are from a handful of women experiencing Haida Gwaii in their twenties/thirties, I found so many parallels to my younger professional forestry days working in the Mid and North island. the ruggedness, the miserable weather, the remoteness, the extremely limited dating options lmao. these are badass women who locked tf innnnnn. a light and easy read, some stories i enjoyed more than others. 🐳

Intermezzo by Sally Rooney 🔵
4/5 ⭐️

Unfortunately, didn’t rise to the heights of normal people / BWWAY but there is no doubt she is one of the most thoughtful and skilful writers we’ve got right now

always a pleasure.

quick reviews ⏩⏩⏩

* Hunchback by Saou Ichikawa 4/5 ⭐️
there are not that many books out there about the disabled community. this book made me think of my perspective and broadened my outlook. i hope it will for others as well
* The Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan 2/5 ⭐️
my ability to care about these characters diminished w/ every chapter 🙄
* Heaven by Mieko Kawakami 4/5⭐️
a novel about bullying but it is so much more than just that…Kawakami is a writer who has a totally different angle than other Japanese writers I have loved, and she is writing such necessary stories. Highly reccomend
* Death Valley by Melissa Broder 3/5 ⭐️
it was okay. this one wasn’t weird enough for me taken in Revelstoke, British Columbia by @wellreadcreature

Come and Get It by Kiley Reid
2/5 ⭐️

Kiley...I loved Such a Fun Age so much...what happened here?

this book is the Netflix show you end up watching all of because it’s only eight episodes and one season but you stop caring around episode three and you leave it on in the background while you scroll on your phone.
