In a world increasingly saturated with digital technology, authentic, handmade art becomes more valuable than ever.

An original artwork is born from an artist’s imagination, brought to life by their own hands.

It carries imperfections, intricate details, countless hours of dedication, and the unmistakable touch of its creator 🤍 by @wendybuiter

🤩 Queen Bee has found her home 🐝

The title of this artwork refers to more than the butterfly. For me, “Monarch” also carries ideas of sovereignty, transformation and taking ownership of how we choose to be seen.

That tension interests me throughout my work: femininity can be decorative, glamorous and playful, while still being completely self-possessed.

THE ART WE CHOOSE SAYS SOMETHING ABOUT US.

I’ve always been fascinated by the moment an artwork becomes personal.

You can admire hundreds of works, but every now and then there is one you keep returning to. A face, a colour, an attitude, a detail, something you can’t quite explain.

That is the point where art stops being something you simply look at and starts becoming something you want to live with.

Perhaps that is why I am so interested in portraiture. My muses have their own presence, but the viewer always brings something of herself to them too.

So I’m curious:

When you fall for a work of art, what usually draws you in first; the colours, the expression, the story, or simply a feeling you can’t explain?

I’d love to know!

Amphitrite (Goddess of the Sea) 🌊 a work inspired by the ancient sea goddess, feminine sovereignty and the quiet authority of a woman who knows exactly who she is.

I have always been drawn to women who do not ask to be seen, yet somehow command the room.

Amphitrite belongs to that world.

The deep blues, the composed gaze, the mythology and adornment all speak to themes that continue to return throughout my work: femininity, identity, beauty and power.

A moment in the studio, surrounded by one of my modern icons.

“LA FABULEUSE” AND WHY FASHION APPEARS IN MY ART 😍

I’m often asked about the recognisable fashion pieces that appear in my work. Chanel earrings, Gucci jewellery, Saint Laurent, Schiaparelli… and sometimes the question follows: “Are you actually allowed to use that?”

But for me, fashion is not product placement. It is iconography.

What we wear has always communicated more than personal taste. Jewellery, clothes and accessories can signal status, aspiration, belonging, independence and the way we choose to position ourselves within society.

That language of social signalling fascinates me.

When I see an object that captures my attention, sometimes during a runway show, sometimes in a campaign, an archive or simply while looking through collections online, I save it.

Then I print it. Enlarged. Cut it out. And place it into a composition.

The scale is important to me. An earring that would normally occupy only a few centimetres suddenly becomes exaggerated, almost monumental.

I then work over and around these collage elements by hand, allowing fashion imagery, drawing and painting to become one visual language.

In “La Fabuleuse”, the Chanel earrings are therefore not simply accessories.

They become part of the construction of the woman herself.

My muses are interested in beauty, fashion and adornment, but they are not passive objects being decorated. They make choices. They construct their image. They decide how they want to be seen.

That agency is central to my work.

Scale, light, distance, context, each decision changes the way a piece is experienced.

I like to live with a work for a moment before deciding where it truly belongs.

Another visit to Max today, on a beautiful, sunny October day! ☀️

It was so warm in Heeze that after changing Max, I even put him in shorts. And that on October 4th! 😄

We spent some time outside at the Kempenhaeghe farm, feeding the donkeys some grass and calling the llamas over. One of them decided to have a little nibble on Max’s arm, and after that he wasn’t particularly interested in petting them anymore hahaha. Cute little creatures though! 🦙

Max has now been living at Kempenhaeghe for four months and he is really enjoying his new home.

He attends De Berkenschutse, a school for children with special educational needs, four half days a week. On the fifth half day, he does a little work placement at De Wissel, where they offer daytime activities.

Last week, we also visited the orthopaedic specialist in Rotterdam. An X-ray of his spine revealed that Max now has a 45-degree scoliosis.

That is quite concerning 🙁

Surgery in Max’s case comes with additional risks because of his DBS (Deep Brain Stimulation) system. The electrical cauterisation used to seal blood vessels during such a major operation could potentially damage his DBS system.

So our next step is another consultation with an orthopaedic specialist in Amsterdam, where his DBS neurologist is also based, to carefully assess the possibilities and risks.

All in all, I am very grateful for the care Max receives and especially happy to see him enjoying his new surroundings and daily activities.

But medically, his situation remains incredibly complex.

For now, I am just enjoying these lovely moments together. A little sunshine, some animals, cuddles on the sofa and a happy Max❤️🤗
