Saying goodbye to loved ones at the Beirut airport has become an unfortunate tradition in Lebanon. After civil protests erupt in Lebanon in 2019, Loulwa Khoury's captivating documentary WE NEVER LEFT follows three expats as they take part in the Lebanese revolution from New York—capturing intimate moments of despair, estrangement, and joy.

In response to the question about the perceived passivity of parts of the Lebanese diaspora, a deeply human point was raised, one that reflects the Lebanese filmmaker‘s @loukhoury profound empathy and understanding of the complexities of human experience and the differences in lived realities.

This perspective applies not only to the Lebanese diaspora but also to many other diasporic communities. Despite the presence of intergenerational trauma that connects different generations, there are also traumas that are specific to each generation, shaped by their particular time and lived experience.

Recognizing this allows us to refrain from blaming one another and instead create space for each individual to have their own process of understanding and healing.

During these horrifying times in our region, watching things unfold from afar is painful and heartbreaking. Remember to give yourselves some grace and remember that you’re not alone. Find your community in the diaspora.

We Never Left, directed by Loulwa Khoury, is a poignant documentary set against the backdrop of the Lebanese revolution that erupted on October 17, 2019. The film follows three young Lebanese expatriates in New York who, while building lives abroad, remain deeply connected to the uprisings and social struggles in their homeland. Through their collective and individual journeys, it reveals the complex emotional and political duality between Beirut and the diaspora: the enduring love for a country marked by crisis, exile, and unfulfilled hopes for change.

We will also have a panel discussion about ‘Diaspora’ with the director present. Read more on our website.

The program is now online. We had hoped to announce the West Asian premiere under better circumstances, but in this region one often has to keep dreaming of that.

Our thoughts are with civilians everywhere, and especially with prisoners in Iran who are trapped between the tyranny of the regime and the realities of war. We wish for a free Iran and a peaceful world.

We also invite you to join our discussion program on March 28 and 29 to listen to and exchange ideas and perspectives with participants from different diaspora communities rooted in this region.

Program and ticket on the bio.
