was beyond lucky today.

got site access to shoot @carpentryplusinc lowering cross laminated timber panels onto the roof of what is now oregon’s tallest mass timber building, and just as i got up there the weather broke for a completely epic magic hour.

today was special in a lot of ways, it was a palpable new beginning to the year and so much more, but most importantly it was an affirmation that i’ve finally found my niche and passion.

the box shot back story.

i had been working on art direction for a shoot on a wind farm to support the launch of a new boot. it had a special heel and outsole design that we needed to show off, and i was trying to figure out something that would make it stand apart beyond just the standard ladder climbing fare.

that’s when i randomly found this trailer directed by @kelvinjoness for a new album by british rapper @aitch it had this one shot where he stood over the camera, with a building thrusting up into the sky behind him. his shoes were directly in the foreground and he was just floating in air. i totally freaked out.

flash forward- we had prototyped it on a small scale and run a test shoot to prove the concept. for the final we built a big one out of speed rail and got an inch thick 4’x8’ sheet of plexi glass.

we drove it 4+ hours out to the wind farm, and one of the best teams i’ve ever worked with came together and started building putting it together with a 300’ wind turbine whipping around overhead. we set the frame up, wrapped it in duvetyne to kill reflections, and peeled the protective paper off the plexi. then @sab_himself and @brawnerstephen went to work, and got it done.

every now and then you get these quiet moments where what you’re trying to capture just jumps right into your camera- or drone.

that’s the way this morning was. showed up with @brawnerstephen and @itsdandickens and just let the sunrise do it’s thing.

it was also the only time i got my dslr out for the whole trip. taken in Levelland, Texas by @wentknipe

on a recent @truebeckconstruction job, i got the chance to climb and shoot from the cab and counterjib of a tower crane.

it was a total blast, the operator mike was super welcoming and had a ton of awesome stories to tell.

We watched the site below come to life, and saw a bald eagle fly over I205- it was pretty unreal. i needed a wider lens to catch it all, guess i’ll just have to climb one again 🤷🏻‍♂️ by @wentknipe

i’ve been quiet lately, have a couple things i’ve been working on behind the scenes, long weeks and long hours makes the time fly. the weather is starting to change though, and i was able to get out on a site recently.

@pathpdx is building some new apartments where the old sunshine dairy used to be. so far they’ve gotten 4 floors done, and i was lucky enough to shoot some of the framing they’re doing on the 5th floor. more to come once i hand off final files to them later this week, but here’s a first look! taken in Sunshine Dairy Foods Inc by @wentknipe

how we got the shot, vs the shot(s)

had the pleasure of shooting with @fabcosteel recently. half way through the day @sab_himself asks the shop foreman if he’ll just douse him in sparks with a 9inch angle grinder. he handed him a full face shield and promptly obliged his request.

him and @brawnerstephen came through with the goods BIG time.
