i can still see it so clearly - my swing in the front garden, the pond full of fish and little turtles, the palm trees reaching up past the roof, men selling mangoes by the roadside - her home in sri lanka always made me feel like the whole world was small enough to hold.she held it together. she held all of us together - quietly, completely, without asking for anything back. that was just her way. always laughing - that cheeky laughthat i recognise now when i hear it in myself. always cooking. always feeding. enough for a village, because to her, everyone who walked through that door deserved a full plate and a full heart. milk toffee, malu roti, iced coffee. you couldn’t leave hungry. you could barely leave at all.i remember running to her as a little girl the second i heard the ice cream van coming down the road. she was the safest place i knew. warm in a way only grandmas know. irreplaceable. irreplaceable.she raised me in those years. and then i left. chased my dreams to the other side of the world. the dreams she believed in before i did. but distance asks something of you that nobody warns you about. you trade the time for the memories and spend the rest of your life hoping the memories were enough.she always asked when i was coming back, every time i called. she missed me. and i miss her so much already. i will carry that weight with so much love it barely feels like weight at all.8 months ago i lost my seeya. now she’s gone too. the two people who made me feel most like myself. grief and gratitude look the same from here. because how do you mourn something without being thankful it was ever yours at all.she gave and gave and gave, to everyone, always, often forgetting herself in the process. i hope she knew how cherished she was. i hope somewhere in all of that laughter she felt as full as she made the rest of us.my appanna.my warmth. my first home. you didn’t have to leave me so soon. 🕊️🤍 by @wenuriovaa
