Photographer Misan Harriman explores whether protest movements actually influence social change.

Misan Harriman has been called “the most talked about photographer of our times”. He is known for his portraits of A-list celebrities and royalty but his true passion is social justice and photographing protest movements around the world.

This film sees him take that work to a new level, on a journey across three continents. But, in a world more divided than ever, he is forced to question whether protest can actually influence social change and if his own work really makes a difference.

Misan seeks answers around the world, from London to L.A. of the Oscars; via South Africa, where his photographic hero helped defeat Apartheid; to the streets of Minneapolis where George Floyd was murdered. That horrific, seismic event is the beating heart of this emotive film.

On his journey, Misan documents the resilience and determination of activists fighting for equality and peace. It’s also an observation of own his personal evolution, as he seeks insights from the likes of Martin Luther King III and Congresswoman Ilhan Omar.

The Red Set Girls and Jack in the Green plus Jonkunnu character made it to the park in one piece. Sadly a car ran into another car as the driver got distracted looking at us 😮 Thank goodness no one was hurt.

The second folk artist screened at the Red Set Girls and Jack in the Green was @cohenbraithwaite - next year we hope to have him and @angelcakepie2 there in person.

Cohen is British born and has made much of his career exploring the folk songs and customs of England. Both of his maternal grandparents were Windrush generation migrants who moved from their home in Barbados to the UK in the 1960s, and because of this heritage, Caribbean culture played a huge part in his upbringing.

For his album ‘Play up the Music’ He has been looking at the connection between Caribbean folk songs, and the Black musical traditions of the Americas, and the English folk song tradition. The song Lorna chose for the event was the opening track of the album, which is a Jamaican folk song called Tacoma’s song, which is a Caribbean retelling of a classic English song which is usually called ‘The Keys of Canterbury’. The song tells the same narrative as the usual English versions of the songs, but infuses it with a bit island groove.

Cohen is masterful player of the Anglo concertina and melodeon 🔥🔥🔥

2022 album The Sorrow Songs: Folk Songs of Black British Experience.

For this album Angeline researched the real lives of Black Ancestors in Britain, ‘re-storying’ them into what she hopes sounds like lost or forgotten British folk songs. The song you’ll hear, Unknown African Boy (d.1830) tells the true story of an enslaved child who was drowned in a shipwreck off St Martin’s, Isles of Scilly.

@iklaudine was in charge of running the Jonkunnu costume workshops. She ran a very tight ship - but much fun was had as you can see. #thatshowweroll
