What happens when the skeleton of the Latin letter meets the bloodline of the Chinese character?

LATIN × CHINESE TYPOGRAPHY

An experimental typography workshop exploring what emerges when Latin and Chinese writing systems meet.

This summer, we were invited to spend three weeks at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, China, as part of PLAYSHOP/YOUNG to young.

PLAYSHOP is an experimental design education program bringing together international practitioners, educators and students through cross-disciplinary workshops and co-teaching.

This year’s edition brought together students from four schools across communication, fashion, industrial design, and design & innovation.

Within this context, we developed Biographical Archive of Hybrid Typographic Descendants, a workshop exploring the encounter between Latin typography and Chinese typography, co-taught with Lu Xi.

For three weeks, students experimented across scripts, forms and cultural references, making them converse, collide, mutate and coexist.

Rather than treating typography as a neutral tool, we approached it as a carrier of culture, identity and position. Students became “border walkers”, questioning the boundaries between writing systems and imagining new forms of visual communication.

The workshop culminated in an exhibition: a living archive of hybrid typographic forms and visual languages born between scripts, cultures and identities.

A month of design, teaching and cultural exchange in China

This summer, we had the incredible opportunity to spend three weeks teaching at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, China, where we also collaborated with the students to design and curate an exhibition showcasing the outcomes of our workshop.

Beyond the classroom, we spent a full month exploring Hangzhou and Shanghai, reconnecting with friends, meeting inspiring people, building new friendships, and discovering new perspectives on Chinese culture.

Immersing ourselves in such a rich and profound culture was an incredibly inspiring experience, both personally and professionally, as well as culturally.

Having previously taught in Shenzhen, China, in 2025, this second teaching experience in the country allowed us to deepen our understanding of design education within the Chinese cultural context, while continuing to reflect on and enrich our own teaching practice.

Teaching design internationally is always a challenge, but it is also a powerful opportunity to question our own teaching methods, gain fresh perspectives, and enrich our pedagogical practice.

From the classroom to the exhibition space, this experience was a valuable reminder of how international design workshops and cross-cultural exchanges can inspire new ways of thinking, creating, and teaching.

A huge thank you to the China Academy of Art for this wonderful experience, and to Lu Xi for the invitation, the trust, and all the unforgettable moments we shared.

The visual identity for @festival_filmar’s 27th edition was conceived around photographs of Freddy Mamani’s neo-Andean architecture.

The posters bring his architecture into the visual language of the festival, where architecture becomes cinema and façades become screens.

The project creates a dialogue between tradition, pride and transformation, celebrating Latin American cinema as a cultural force capable of reshaping how we inhabit and experience space.

Flyer for the visual identity created for Les Quarts d’Heure 2025 @theatresevelin36

A lively festival dedicated to 15-minute creations by emerging choreographers and collectives.

A pack of kittens embodies this new generation: multiple gazes, collective energy, somewhere between fragility and creative power. Halftones and saturated colors shift the image from cute to radical, echoing a choreographic scene that constantly challenges expected codes.

Some details of the poster for the visual identity created for Les Quarts d’Heure 2025 @theatresevelin36

Les Quarts d’Heure de Sévelin 36 is a lively and vibrant festival showcasing 15-minute creations by emerging choreographers and collectives.

The group of kittens functions as a metaphor for the emerging choreographic scene. They appear together, in a pack, echoing the spirit of collectives and a new generation of artists. Their multiple gazes reflect the diversity of contemporary choreographic languages. Their posture, both gentle and lively, expresses the tension between fragility and creative power that defines artistic beginnings. The graphic treatment, through halftones and saturated colors, shifts the image from cute to radical, just as contemporary dance constantly reinterprets and challenges expected codes.
