🐻 Sitka•Alaska 🐻

 — I T I N E R A R Y —
• Sitka Centennial Visitors Center
• WildFlour Cafe & Bakery
• Community Kids Playground
• Sitka Sound Science Center
• Sitka National Historical Park
• Alaska Raptor Center

Very walkable once the bus transporter drops you off at the visitor center.
There is a public library in that same area we went to check out. There are shops around that have souvenirs. We always look for magnets from each destination.
Wanted to go find a coffee spot too.

• Wildflour Cafe & Bakery •
Grabbed coffee and got a sleeve of macaroons to try.
The temperature was 67° F, the perfect time to let the kids play at the • Community Kids Playground • before we go to the national park. 🏞️

• Sitka Sound Science Center • is right next to the playground, we decided to opt out to explore this because the kids said they wanted to see the Raptors instead. Pivoted the plans and that’s exactly what we could do because we didn’t pre-book anything.

• Sitka National Historical Park •
Walked inside the visitor center to ask the park rangers for Junior Ranger booklets. These booklets are our “bread and butter” for homeschool learning when visiting national parks. We all actively learn with the booklets as we help each other learn about the national park we are visiting.
Walking the trails and seeing the totem poles in person was pretty neat to see. Huckleberries were natures treats that helped keep the whole crew active and ready to explore the next part of the trail.
Once the kids learned what the huckleberries looked and tasted like they foraged the entire day at port 🫶🏼

• Alaska Raptor Center •
We got the membership for the day and explored the property with the raptors and saw the salmon swimming upstream to where they would lay their eggs. You can walk to the center but there is inclines getting to the center. Most people take the bus there.

We walked back to the Sitka visitor center to wait for the buses to take us back to the cruise ship since the ships are not docked at the main city.
It was such a beautiful day! taken in Sitka, Alaska by @weplusthreee

✨ Yes…. Yes I did! ✨
Imagine my surprise when I pushed open the door to this library and stepped foot into the most beautiful library I’ve ever seen.

This Abbey houses the largest Monastic Library in the entire World! 🌍

📚 70,000 books on display while the entire Abbey collection is over 200,000 books.

🚪 There are hidden bookcase doors that have spiraled staircases that access the top shelves in the library that the monks used to be discreet when accessing other parts of the Abbey.

🎨 The 7 cupolas on the ceiling showcase the art frescoes painted by Bartolomeo Altomonte that were painted in 1775 and took a year to finish.
Each fresco represents a stage in the development of human understanding; each painted differently to showcase:
•Theology
•Philosophy
•Medicine
•Law
•Poetry & Fine Arts
•Mathematics & Natural Sciences
•History & Human Reasoning

@benediktinerstiftadmont is such an absolute gem to visit. There is so much to see inside and outside. When planning to visit be sure to check out the rest of the museum as well as the library, gardens, church and walk their property.

SEND this to someone who is a book lover and would spend hours sitting in this library! 🫶🏼🌷

🌳 Forests
🗿 Museums

🏕️City Parks

We visited a beautiful property in Admont, Austria with: gardens, a museum, a library, montastery and beautiful walking grounds.

The Balkans have so many wonderful places to visit! Here are just a few we have explored and recommend stopping at.

📍 Porporela, Dubrovnik, Croatia 🇭🇷
📍 Stolac, Bosnia and Herzegovina 🇧🇦
📍 Lovcén National Park, Montenegro 🇲🇪
📍 Port of Montenegro 🇲🇪
📍 Fortress Gorazda, Montenegro 🇲🇪
📍 Budva Citadel, Montenegro 🇲🇪
📍 Sveti Stefan, Montenegro 🇲🇪

Each of these are accessible by car. We rented a car from @sixtmontenegro for our trip and it was so easy to travel with. The roads are easy to drive on just like we do back in the States.
Just be sure to bring your passport with you as you’re crossing multiple borders and let the rental car company know you will be crossing borders with the car. 🚙🗺️🌳 by @weplusthreee

Every week during your @boundlesslife cohort will be packed full of many activities. Some of these activities are included, while others are at an additional cost. Here in Kotor, Montenegro these are just a glimpse of the activities you can experience.

☀️ Morning meditations: great way to begin our days in the Wellness Hub here in Kotor, Montenegro.

🏃🏼‍♀️Mondays: bi-monthly hikes with a local guide. Alternating between run & walk club after school drop off.

🐊 Tuesdays: Animal Flow with Jordan @thisishowihuman this is a bodyweight movement class that enhances strength and flexibility by moving our bodies like animals.

🧘🏼‍♀️ Wednesdays: Yoga classes with Ciarra @cimoresayless this class is very restorative after Monday and Tuesdays classes.

🚤 Thursdays: Parent activities include:
Boat Rides, City walking Tours, museum visits, cave exploring, kayaking and more…

✏️While Thursdays are also endeavor times where a parent will come to the school and teach the kids a skill or talent to them. (I taught the kids how to tie their shoes a new fun way.. that takes them 3 seconds - now all the kids want shoes with laces 🫶🏼)

🚒 Fridays: Kids enjoy going on field trips bi-monthly. They have explored Kotor Old Town, the fire station, the airport, and the park . As this cohort, the kids are learning about SDG16 Peace Justice and Strong Institutions.

🏙️ Saturdays: Scheduled family outings that require a bus to transport us to another city.

🃏 Sundays: Relax and Reset for the week! Usually the kids and adults are all planning to get together for potluck dinners, playing cards or just enjoying each other’s company.

With a Boundless Life cohort, there’s always something to do! You have the freedom to choose which activities to participate in, depending on your work, time, and budget. Honestly, we’ve ended up busier than we anticipated before coming here!
The best part is, you’re never obligated to join in if you need a break or simply want to say no.

There are many more activities in nearby cities and countries you can plan for your family to experience or explore as a group. The possibilities are endless here! taken in Kotor, Montenegro by @weplusthreee

Different experiences from USA & EU grocery stores:

When grocery shopping in Europe you are only buying what you can carry back to your place. As the grocery stores are smaller and locally within walking distance.
Everything you need is in different stores (Cosmetic store, pharmacy, grocery store, hardware store, stationary store)

In AMERICA you drive to the grocery store (on average 10-30 minute drives)
Once a week and get a large haul that will consist of all your meals for the week or more.
The stores will have everything you need in one building. (Some specialty items might be in neighboring stores you have to drive to)

🇺🇸 Meal prepping for a week+ in America.
Daily prepping in Europe.

🇺🇸 One large grocery store bill in America.
A million* receipts a week in Europe.

🇺🇸 Bulk items and large baskets in America.
Smaller items and smaller baskets in Europe.

When you see an item that is low stocked in Europe they don’t have any in the back to replace it. We have learned while here if you see something you need to grab it because next time it might not be there. taken in Voli Hipermarket by @weplusthreee

Must do HIKE in Montenegro 🇲🇪⛰️⬇️

✨ Kotor Fortress ✨

🗺️ Distance: 1.3 Miles

⛰️ Elevation: 715 feet (217 meters)

🥾 Difficulty: Moderate - Hard (1000+ stair steps)

‼️ During the busy season April - December the hike cost 15€ per person. The off season (January & February) the hike is free.
No restrooms on trail - be sure to pack water and snacks and leave no trace behind.

There are 2 main entrances to the start of the hike located on the back wall of Kotor’s Old Town. There are plaques “Kotor Fortress” that lead you to the start of the hike.
Take plenty of stops along the switch backs for the views and for breaks.
Listen to the church bells ring in old town from a Birds Eye view. Enjoy the views from above of the Bay and Old Town.

🌄 SAVE this hike for your future hikes to Montenegro

When you forget to check the weather for your vacation…
You can’t help but to just laugh at your mistakes. The weather and my plans did not agree today!

🔔 Bring a hair tie (for long hair) & a rain coat for possible weather interruptions on your trip. An umbrella wouldn’t have worked with this wind so leave it at home.

Kotor Winter Carnival

This was our first Carnival experience abroad and what made it even more magical was we were in
the heart of Montenegro surrounded with our @boundlesslife families!

📅This event takes place in Late February to early March every year in:
📍 Kotor, Montenegro

🎉 The Vibrant Parades featured Colorful costumes, lively music, and energetic dancers filling the streets.

🎭The carnival is known for its unique, handmade masks worn by participants… our favorite had to be the cats because Kotor is known for its cats.

🎶 You’ll experience Montenegro’s rich traditions, from folk music to delicious local food to how the community comes together to celebrate.

PSA:
When you plan a trip to a new destination check the calendar for special events taking place. Local holidays, festivals, carnivals, special events & celebrations.
You want to prepare for the crowds, traffic, closed streets, busy cafes and restaurants or when to attend the events yourself.
Experiencing the culture and traditions of the places you visit is the best way to immerse yourself in the country and local community. taken in Kotor, Montenegro by @weplusthreee
