How do you decide what to charge?

If you charge by the hour, then every time you get better at your job you make less money, and every tool you build to speed yourself up cuts your own income. That is a floor. It tells you when to walk away. It never tells you what to charge.

Market rate is not a price either. It is a band. It stops you saying something absurd in either direction, and that is all it does.

The only real basis is what the work is worth to the person buying it. You cannot know that without asking them for their numbers. What one customer is worth to them, how many slots they have open, what their offers sell for.

Then price it before you do the work. Always before.

Once it is delivered there is nothing left for them to want, and the only two bases you have left are the weak ones.

Every quote I have ever had to reconstruct after the fact came out lower than it should have been. Every single one. by @weresoback.co

This shop publishes no email address. Not on the contact page, not in the footer, nowhere.

There is a form. Forms go to a plugin, and plugins fail quietly; that is exactly the kind of failure nobody notices, because a working form and a broken one look identical from the outside.

A form also blocks everybody who wants to attach something. Suppliers, job applicants, anyone sending a photo of the part.

An address is one line. It costs nothing, it works when your site does not, and people trust it more than a box.

What is the first thing you fix in a business that feels stuck?

It is almost never marketing. That is what people ask me for, and it is almost never the thing.

What I do first is map how the business actually runs. Every step, who touches it, what happens between somebody enquiring and the money arriving.

Two things always fall out of that. Where the money leaks, and where the owner's hours go.

The leak is usually something small and boring that has been happening every week for two years, and nobody looked because on its own it is never big enough to notice.

The hours are usually going into work nobody would pay for if it appeared on an invoice.

Fix those two and the growth part gets a lot simpler, because now you are pouring into something that holds.

Most people want the pouring. The hole is the part nobody wants to look at. by @weresoback.co

Do you know what your business actually costs to run this month?

Most owners find out at tax time, from an accountant, about a year that already finished.

I got tired of guessing, so the numbers pull themselves overnight and land in one file I can read in a minute. Spend, subscriptions, what breaks even and what does not.

It took an afternoon to build and it removed a question I used to answer badly every single month.

Knowing the cost is not the same as cutting it. But you cannot cut what you have never looked at. by @weresoback.co

Four pages on this site exist at two different addresses each. Both load. Neither sends you to the other.

To a search engine that is eight pages, not four, and whatever authority those pages earned is split in half.

There is a case variant of one of them live as well, so the same page answers at three addresses.

This is not a content problem and no amount of writing fixes it. It is one redirect per duplicate.

If your site has been rebuilt or restructured at any point, this is the most likely thing hiding in it. by @weresoback.co

Your search result is two lines of text, and if you do not write them, something else does.

One company has no description on a single page, so Google picks a sentence out of the page and uses that.

One has titles that run to 182 characters, all ending in the same 70-character suffix, on a result that gets cut off around 60.

One has nothing set at all, so a shared link arrives as a bare address with no image and no description.

These are the two lines people read before deciding whether you are worth a click. They are free, they are yours, and they take an afternoon.

Send this company's homepage to somebody and the preview card says Home.

No image. No description. One word.

That card is what a referral sees. Somebody recommends you, pastes the link into a message, and the person on the other end gets Home.

It is two tags in the head of the page. Set once, applies to every share forever.

Check yours: paste your own URL into a message to yourself and look at what comes back before you send it. by @weresoback.co

Do you actually know where your customers come from?

Most local owners I talk to think it is the website. Then they spend four thousand dollars on a new one, nothing changes, and they decide marketing does not work.

The weight is not there. In the local search research the Google Business Profile carries about a third of what decides who shows up. The reviews carry about a fifth. The website's own pages carry about fifteen percent.

97% of people read the reviews. Nearly a third will not use a business rated under four and a half stars, and that number almost doubled in a year.

So the profile and the review stream do the finding. The website does the booking and the proof.

A beautiful site behind a neglected profile cannot fill your calendar. It was never the part that gets you found.

I am not saying the site does not matter. I am saying it is the second thing, and almost everybody buys it first. by @weresoback.co

Their listings say grooming, daycare and boarding.

Their website is a page of grooming prices. Daycare appears zero times. Boarding appears zero times.

So somebody who found them while searching for boarding lands on a site that says they do not offer it, and leaves.

This is the cheapest kind of lost work: the service already exists, the staff already do it, and the only thing missing is a sentence.

Open your own site and count how many of the things you actually sell are written down on it. by @weresoback.co

This salon has a storefront. Their website does not say where it is.

The only geography on the whole site is the city name in the footer. No street, no map, no directions link.

Their street address is on Google, on two directories and on their old site. It is just not on the one page they control.

Put that next to a Google listing that says the business is permanently closed, and a customer who wants to walk in has no working way to find the door.

If you have a physical location, your address belongs in the footer of every page. It is one line and it is the reason people come. by @weresoback.co

The worst thing in a small business is a reply that sat unread for four days.

Not because you do not care. Because it landed while you were doing the actual work, and by the evening it was under sixty other things.

So I put a watcher on the two inboxes that matter. It reads for client replies and access grants, and it writes one line I see at the start of the day.

It does not answer anything. A person reads every message before anything happens; the machine only decides what is worth surfacing.

Nothing here replies for me. It just makes sure I never find out late. by @weresoback.co

Why does nobody answer your cold emails?

The measured average is under half a percent. Across seven and a half million cold emails last year, 0.45% got a reply. It is not that you are bad at it; the channel is that bad.

Here is the part that actually matters. The inbox you are writing into has been trained by years of the same email. Free mail address, vague problems with your website, guaranteed first page on Google.

So a real email that sounds anything like that gets deleted by a rule that person made a long time ago, and they were right to make it.

The only thing I have found that cuts through is a defect they can check themselves in under a minute. Not a promise, not a rate, not a case study. Something wrong they can see on their own phone while they are still reading.

Then the email is not a claim any more. It is just true, and they can prove it without me. by @weresoback.co
