No naše sedmo izdanje Uvertire pozabavit će se temom ljeta. I da sve u prirodi nije uvijek idila, podsjetit ćemo se pričajući o sezoni iza nas koju su obilježile su suše, rekordne temperature u kolovozu, požari i pretoplo more.

Kako se gradovi mogu prilagoditi sve ekstremnijim vremenskim uvjetima, tema je koju ćemo otvoriti u društvu direktora Botaničkog vrta PMF-a, Vanju Stamenkovića, i krajobraznog arhitekta Lucasa Werfta iz @werftgardens 🌳

Designing with nature.

Our latest short film explores the thinking behind The Garden Brewery project and the role landscape can play in responding to climate challenges in cities.

For us, landscape architecture is not simply about creating spaces. It is about establishing the conditions through which nature can recover, adapt, and evolve over time.

The project demonstrates how soil restoration, tree canopy, water management, and passive cooling strategies can transform a former asphalt site into a functioning urban ecosystem.

Thank you to everyone involved, especially @studio.inc___ in bringing this project to life.

The success of a landscape is not measured only by how it looks. It is also measured by how people use it.

The Garden Brewery was conceived as a flexible outdoor environment where comfort takes precedence over formal expression.

Shade, air movement, vegetation and temperature, shape the experience of the space more than any predetermined programme.

Visitors gather beneath the canopy, remain longer during summer months, and occupy the garden in ways that were never prescribed by design.

The intention was not to create a finished image.

It was to create conditions for people and nature to coexist comfortably over time.

Sometimes climate adaptation begins with simple actions:

removing asphalt, restoring soil, planting trees, and allowing water to remain in the landscape.

The Garden Brewery project was not designed around appearance. It was designed around performance.

The landscape combines four interconnected systems:
→ Tree canopy for shade
→ Vegetation for evapotranspiration
→ Permeable surfaces for infiltration
→ Water retention for continuous soil moisture

Together, these strategies form a passive cooling system without mechanical infrastructure or energy-intensive technologies.

Thermal measurements recorded a surface temperature difference of 29.1°C between adjacent asphalt and the permeable landscape within the site.

As cities continue to experience rising temperatures, landscape architecture has an increasingly important role to play in shaping urban resilience.

The Garden Brewery project began with a simple question:

What happens when asphalt is removed and we let nature return?

Located on a former industrial parking lot in Zagreb, the project transforms a sealed surface into a living landscape that cools, infiltrates water, supports biodiversity, and creates more comfortable conditions for nature and people.

Rather than starting with form, the project began with soil, water, vegetation, and time.

Today, what was once asphalt functions as a beer garden, gathering space, habitat, and climate-responsive landscape.

In a warming climate, landscape can no longer be understood as decoration. It is the foundation of healthier, cooler, and more resilient places to live.

A few years ago, our team at Werft had the honour of reimagining the landscape of the beautiful Villa Sheherezade in Dubrovnik, Croatia.

We never expected to see our work appear in a Hollywood film — and yet, there it was in “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent”, starring Nicolas Cage and Pedro Pascal.

It was a quiet project, done with care and respect for the place. Seeing it brought to life on screen was a humbling and joyful surprise.
We are grateful for moments like these that remind us of the far-reaching impact of thoughtful design.

Kako je bakina kuća postala poslovni i životni prostor, u novom broju Verta ispričao nam je cijenjeni krajobrazni arhitekt, Lucas Werft, vlasnik @werftgardens.

Kao krajobrazni arhitekt ne vjeruje da mu je primarni zadatak stvoriti nešto lijepo. Njegova funkcija je, kaže, rješavanje problema koji proizlaze iz konteksta projekta.

Naglašava i da mu je vlastita autorska prisutnost sve manje važna, što diskretnija, to bolje. U idealnom slučaju, kaže, vrt bi trebao izgledati kao prirodna ekstenzija krajolika, gotovo neprimjetno oblikovan. Suvremene intervencije, poput staza, zidova, bazena ili popločenja, nisu isključene, ali ih se mora koristi pažljivo i s mjerom.

Kod Lucasa, kao da svaki vrt ima svoj ritam disanja. Kao da prostor progovara ako znamo slušati.🌿
