Before a team walks into a board meeting, a funder pitch or a media interview together, three questions save most of the trouble that shows up later:

1. What is the one sentence we all agree on, even if we say it differently?
2. Who is answering which part of this?
3. What is the question we are most likely to get, and have we agreed on the answer?

Most teams skip this. They assume everyone is on the same page because they work together, not because they checked.

Fifteen minutes with these three questions, before the room, catches the gaps while there is still time to close them.

October means budget season for a lot of organizations, and communication training is usually one of the last line items considered, if it makes the list at all.

That's a mistake. The organizations that walk into January ready are the ones that decided in the fall, not the ones scrambling to add it in March after a rough interview or a board presentation that fell flat.

If media training, speaking coaching or a content strategy engagement is something your team has talked about but never scheduled, now is the time to put it on next year's calendar.

Individual coaching changes one leader. Team training changes how a whole organization communicates.

I work with associations, nonprofits and organizations that want more than one strong speaker. They want a team that can walk into any room and represent the mission with clarity.

Group workshops cover the same fundamentals as one-on-one coaching:
Audience awareness
Message clarity

Delivery that supports the story instead of distracting from it.
The difference is scale.

Starting a new engagement this month with a client building something brand new, and she wanted the messaging strategy in place before anything else.

Not the logo first. Not the website first. The story first.

When the story is clear from day one, everything built after it, the launch materials, the website, the social presence, stands on solid ground instead of getting patched together later.

It is an honor to be trusted with that starting point.

Most organizations build content one piece at a time. A social post here. A newsletter there. A speech for one event.

That burns time, and none of it builds on the last thing.

A stronger approach starts with one strategic story and lets every piece of content pull from it:

The board deck
The grant application
The social post
The annual report

All from the same well.

That is what a content strategy engagement does. One clear story, built once, used everywhere.

If you have read any of these posts and thought, that's me, this is your sign.

A free 30-minute call is the easiest way to find out whether this work is right for you.

No pitch. No pressure. Just a conversation about where you are and where you want to be in the room.

People assume trust comes from sounding polished. It does not.

The most trustworthy speakers are not always the smoothest ones. They are the ones who clearly thought about their audience before they walked in.

That trust comes from two things:
1-Knowing your audience's questions before they ask them
2-Doing the preparation instead of relying on charisma to carry you

A speaker who has done that work can stumble over a sentence and still be believed. A speaker who has not can deliver every line perfectly and still lose the room.

People ask why a journalist ends up coaching executives.

The honest answer: I spent years watching smart, capable people get misunderstood because they led with what they wanted to say instead of what their audience needed to hear.

I watched them make up talking points that didn’t make any sense to real people instead of honestly answering a question.

That gap is the whole job.

I am not teaching people to perform. I am teaching them to translate.

"I just wanted to share a few thoughts."

"I think this might be useful."

Those phrases feel polite. They also tell the room not to take you seriously yet.

Your audience decides how much weight to give you in the first sentence. A hedge gives them permission to discount everything after it.

Drop the soft opener. Say the thing.

I work with two kinds of people:

1. The executive who just stepped into a bigger role and feels the gap between what they know and how they are landing in the room.

2. The organization that has watched talented leaders struggle to communicate at the level they lead, and decided to do something about it.

If you are in either of those places, a free conversation is the right place to start.

No pitch. No pressure. Just 30 minutes to talk about where you are and whether this work makes sense for you.

Most presentations open with one of three things:

A pleasantry: "Good morning everyone."
A sound check: "Can everyone hear me okay?"
A participation prompt: "Show of hands if you..."

All three tell your audience the same thing: nothing important is happening yet.

Swipe through to see the openers I hear most often and what to say instead.

Your first sentence is your best real estate. Use it.

Save this one for your next presentation. Link in bio if you want help building the rest of it. by @werkingcommunication
