The summer holidays are here, and for those of us with kids, this generally means six weeks of disrupted routines, no childcare structure, and approximately zero time to yourself.

If your running takes a hit over the summer, you’re in very good company - but it doesn’t have to disappear entirely.

Here’s what actually works:

🌅 Run before the house wakes up

The 6am slot nobody else is fighting you for becomes your most reliable training window for six weeks. It sounds brutal, but it genuinely isn’t. It can actually be a real sanctuary of me-time in an otherwise intense period.

✂️ Shorten your runs, not your frequency

A 20-minute run still counts. Consistency through the holidays matters far more than any individual session. Don’t cancel - just trim.

🚲 Get the kids involved

Bike, scooter, or run alongside - even once. It normalises running as something the family does, not something you disappear to do alone.

I’ll always remember hearing a lovely story from a Dad who did just this, and as his daughter was pedalling alongside him, she declared “Daddy, this is the best day of my life”. (Disclaimer: similar results not guaranteed!)

😊 Lower the performance bar, raise the enjoyment bar

Easy runs, new routes, no watch pressure. Your aerobic base will thank you in September - and you might actually enjoy it.

🧘 Don’t catastrophise a missed week

School holidays will disrupt your training. That is completely normal, not a failure. The runners who bounce back quickest in September are the ones who didn’t beat themselves up in August.

Six weeks goes fast. Keep it simple, keep it moving. 🏃 by @weruncoaching

Nephie ran the UTS 25k recently

The bad weather route. 2 hours 54 minutes. 2nd in the 50-55 age category.

Coach Kelvin had only been working with Nephie for a couple of weeks before race day - so the focus was entirely on pre-race nutrition, fuelling strategy, and hydration during the race itself.

She felt brilliant out there. Pushed hard when it mattered. And it showed.

This is what proper race prep does. It’s not just the miles - it’s knowing exactly what to eat, when to take it on, and how to manage your energy across the whole race. Get that right and you go into race day with a completely different kind of confidence.

Nephie did the hard work. We just made sure she had everything she needed to back it up.

2nd in category, and we’re just getting started 💥

Rachel started with one goal: finish a marathon without feeling like she was about to keel over.

She ended up running times she never thought were achievable - and practically skipping over the finish line in New York.

That’s what happens when the coaching is right. The goal you came in with stops being the ceiling.

Now obviously, loads of runners are using an app these days to get their training plan.

Pop in a race and a target time and it spits out a schedule for you. Simple, cheap, and for a lot of people it feels like all the coaching you’d ever need.

But, I also hear from lots of runners who’ve bumped up against the limitations of these apps, and they’re often frustrated for the same reasons.

So here’s what your app won’t do:

🩹 Notice the niggle in your stride before it turns into an injury.

A training app just moves you onto the next session on the schedule.

A good coach surfaces niggles before they become injuries. The tightness, the slight limp, the compensation that’s been building for weeks.

And most importantly, they adapt to overcome them.

📅 Change your plan when your week’s gone sideways.

Bad sleep, a stressful week at work, a knock to the shin - a coach adjusts around your actual life.

An app just keeps handing you the same session regardless of what’s going on for you.

🛑 Message you to say skip today, you need the rest.

That’s not in an algorithm’s job description. It’ll just flag you as behind schedule and leave you to feel guilty about it.

💙 Know why you’re doing any of this.

Your goal was never really a number on a screen. It’s the marathon you promised yourself you’d finish, or the PB you’ve been chasing for three years.

A coach knows that story - and trains you with it in mind, not just your average pace.

Technology can give you a cookie cutter training plan. A coach helps you become a runner.

Third heatwave this year. Advice for runners 🔥

The guilt of skipping a run on a hot day is usually worse than the run itself would have been.

You know how it goes. You decide not to go out, and then spend the afternoon second-guessing yourself. Wondering if you’re going backwards. Wondering if this is where the wheels fall off.

It isn’t.

Fitness is cumulative. Built over months - not any single session. One hot day off changes nothing.

That said, if you do want to run in the heat, there are real benefits. Heat adaptation, resilience, and honestly - some of the best runs you’ll ever have happen in conditions you thought would be terrible.

Go sensibly (hydration, listen to your body) and you might surprise yourself.

But wanting to go and not wanting to go are both completely valid. There’s no wrong answer here.

Push through or ease up - what are you doing this week? Let us know in the comments 👇 by @weruncoaching

Oliver has been running for over 20 years

In 2020 and 2021, repeated calf injuries kept stopping him in his tracks. That’s when he came to We Run

He’s been working with Coach Graeme on nutrition and Coach Angela on his running ever since - and the results speak for themselves

9 ultramarathons completed. 5 podiums

Including a win at the Hammeldown Hammer Ultra earlier this year - his comeback race after a stress fracture kept him out for the second half of last year

Wet, brutal conditions. One of the hardest courses going

Oliver won it

That’s what happens when you stop leaving things to chance and build a proper support system around your running

A lot of runners dread their sessions. Too hard, too boring, or just not quite right.

Katia’s been training with Adam and - her words - she’s really enjoying it. Because the training is pitched at the right level for her.

That matters more than most people realise. Enjoyment is what keeps you consistent. Consistency is what gets you results.

Didn’t get into London this year?

I know - it feels unfair, unjust.

But!

There’s a whole world of other opportunities out there.

Just as fun, just as interesting, and they’ll still get you fit and give you a proper sense of achievement.

Here’s five to consider:

🌲 A trail marathon. Swap the crowds for mountain views, quiet trails and a finish line that really feels earned.

✈️ Racing abroad. Valencia, Berlin, Amsterdam, all brilliant, and you get a holiday out of it too.

👥 A relay or team event. Split the miles, double the fun, and nothing builds friendships like a shared finish line.

🌅 An ultra. Further than you’d normally go, with proper pit stops and views to match.

📍 Your own DIY marathon. Plan the route, get your mates involved, make it entirely yours.

None of these are a consolation prize. Plenty of our runners have picked one of these over London and had their best year of running because of it.

There’s this unwritten rule in running - once you set off, you run. All of it. No walking

And I get why people think this way

But it’s costing some runners more than they realise

Walking at the right moment isn’t a sign you’re struggling. It’s a sign you understand what the session is actually for

Fuelling on the move. Keeping effort honest on a hill. Real recovery between intervals. Safe footing on sketchy ground

All of it is smart running, not failed running

The full breakdown is in the video. Which of these has tripped you up before? Drop it in the comments 👇 by @weruncoaching
