update: we brought my mom back home a few weeks ago, and she’s doing much better :)

I’ve been caring for my mom in the ICU this week. In just a few days, I’ve seen and felt the full spectrum.

I see my mom in an oxygen mask over Facetime, and I instantly feel the fear of losing her. Sadness that she has to suffer through yet another health scare so soon after retiring. The warm buzzing of love, and steadying resolve that I just want to fly home and be by her side.

I give my mom reiki and let her quietly sob into my chest. She cries as she recounts to the nurse how she took care of her dying parents, and I see the little girl that just wants her mom and dad back. I feel my grandparents’ love reverberating through her grief.

As I hold my mother, my heart both aches and swells with pride. I hate that her inner child never quite had a fully safe space before me, and I love that I can be the soft, steady landing spot she’s always deserved.

My therapist asks me what holding it all feels like. I envision a massive, swirling ball of prismatic energy, every color of the spectrum weaving together in harmonious entropy. The tragedy, the beauty, the sobbing, the laughter. It’s not all pleasant, but it’s all welcome.

I remember once again that my relationship with my mom is my single proudest accomplishment. I remember the explosive fights, the crying fits, the anger that I didn’t get all that I needed as a child. And I remember that while it hasn’t always felt like it, I’ve never doubted for one second that I am fiercely loved.

Some people think I’m grounded because I don’t feel as much as others do.

But really, I’m grounded because I fucking feel it all. by @wes.yen
