Yearly backpacking trip is in the books for ‘26. Lost a few good men on this one but we had a nice trifecta going. 33 miles and 6K feet elevation gain in the Desolation Wilderness of Lake Tahoe. Wrights Lake over Rockbound Pass to Lake Schmidell, on the Rubicon Trail over Mosquito Pass to Lake Aloha, on the PCT/TRT over Dicks Pass and scramble down to Lower Velma Lake, finishing at Bayview. Also known as the Fifteen Lakes Traverse. Was the most consistent wind I’ve had to deal with in the wilderness, leaving everything dusty and affecting sleep, but it kept us cool and couldn’t take away from the views. First trip to the Trinity Alps with a couple of best buds. One of the more rugged trips I’ve been on, complete with bouldering and scrambling while using cairns and GPS to find our way on trailless routes. The manzanita and steep inclines tried to hold us back but we persevered, and the scratches it gave us were worth the solitude and vistas. 25 miles and 5K feet elevation. TRT - Mount Rose to Brockway Summit

This was last section I needed to complete the Tahoe Rim Trail and boy did it not disappoint, with some stunner views and perfect halfway stop for camping and ice-cold glacial water at Gray Lake. I did this one by myself and chose to do it counter-clockwise for more enjoyment. With that, I have completed the TRT and what a journey it has been - Although the trail mileage claims 165 miles, I’ve calculated my total trip as the following: 214.53 miles, 31,441 feet elevation gain, 76 hours 23 minutes moving time, and 21 days 14 nights. Crazy to think I spent 3 weeks on the trail and 2 weeks of it sleeping in the forest. It brought me sanity in times of uncertainty, namely the pandemic, and allowed me to push my mind and body to the limits. I suggest everyone try backpacking even if it’s for one night - it will teach you self-reliance and tenacity, and allow you to reconnect with nature and primitive living, something we could all use in the modern world. When in doubt, just put one foot in front of the other ⛰️

TRT - Tahoe City to Brockway Summit

The unofficial beginning of the TRT, we knocked out this fun little section with just over 3,300 feet of elevation gain and 20 miles. I had @djmackle and @santacruzandmontereysigns join me on this one and I had a lot of fun planning this expedition. Hiking in 5 liters of water was tough but definitely needed dry camping the first night. Watson Lake was a nice respite despite being shallow and not providing fish for us. Another summer has come and gone. I can healthily say we grinded this one out at over 50 shows with not much time off. In some ways it was a hard tour wrought with a litany of hurdles, but in some ways our determination and the well-oiled machine that is our crew and company ironed things out as well as they could. Many memories made. Can’t wait to do it all over again. I already know next summer will be a blast ;)

I really felt the hometown love this year at Cali Roots. Making the front of the local paper was quite the accomplishment for me and brought everything back full circle to where it all began.
