Substation virtualization is not a future project. You can start today.

When virtualization comes up in substation automation, the conversation often jumps straight to vPAC, software-defined protection and the fully virtualized substation.
Exciting? Absolutely.

But you don’t have to wait for that future to start benefiting from virtualization.

HMI, gateway, RTU, historian and engineering functions already run on computers today. Moving these station-level applications from dedicated hardware onto a common virtualized platform can be a practical first step – without touching protection.

So how do you do it properly?

On September 29, Anton Krupskii from #Welotec and Stefan Hufnagl from #COPADATA will take a practical look at Station-Level Virtualization.

💡Innovation in action at Westermo R&D HQ

Last week, our R&D team in Västerås hosted Innovation Day under the theme 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐠𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐩𝐬.

Ten teams turned ideas into proof of concepts, exploring new ways to strengthen how we build and deliver the future of industrial data communication. The energy, creativity, and collaboration across teams was really inspiring.

A special congratulations to the winning team behind KITTEN (Kernel Issue Trustworthy Triage Engine) 🐱
This application automates security triage of Linux kernel vulnerabilities, helping us quickly identify what could impact our software and maintain secure, robust solutions.

Innovation Day shows how small steps lead to meaningful improvements – and it was two days filled with teamwork, learning, and fun👏

👩‍💻👩‍🔬 IGE Day x Westermo – third year in a row!

Today, we once again took part in IGE Day (Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day), welcoming girls and non-binary young people aged 13–19 to explore the possibilities of a future in engineering at our HQ in Västerås, Sweden.

IGE Day is all about broadening the image of who can become an engineer, showing that tech careers are creative, fun, and meaningful.

Our visitors spent the day learning by doing through four interactive stations:

🔧 Mechanical Engineering – from requirements to prototypes, turning ideas into tangible solutions
👩‍💻 Software Engineering – building simple games and exploring programming basics
🌐 Network Engineering – setting up a live video stream using a switch and IP camera
⚡ Electronics & Programming – building and programming a setup that converts analog signals into digital ones, showing how hardware and software work together in real systems

The day also included inspiring role models, engaging conversations, and of course, a well-earned pizza lunch 🍕

Alma, 16, from Hitachi Gymnasiet says about IGEDay at Westermo:
"I thought the event was really good, the stations and the setup were great. The tasks were tech‑focused but in different ways, so I got to try a bit of everything. I liked the group work too, you got to team up with new people and quickly learn how to work together to solve the tasks. I've known since I was about 12 that I want to be a programmer, but it was fun to see all the other types of engineers you can become. The network engineer task was extra fun because it felt like something you could actually work with in real life."
