They came ready to create. 🎬

This summer, eight young people from Walpole Island First Nation explored storytelling, filmmaking and creative collaboration through the Walpole Island Youth Film Production Workshop.

Led by FIMS faculty member Sally Kewayosh alongside mentors Brooke Swaney, Lydell Mitchell, Cody Lightning, Larissa Wrightman and Derek Sands, participants developed their ideas, operated cameras and sound equipment, and learned how to edit their footage. The experience concluded with a community screening of their work.

“I think it all comes back to representation,” Kewayosh said. “Seeing ourselves realistically on screen can foster a larger sense of belonging.”

The workshop was organized in partnership with the Walpole Island Employment and Training Department.

Two weeks fly by so quickly when you're visiting from across continents! 🌍

While their time at @westernuniversity was short, participants in the 2026 FIMS Information Professionals Summer School leave with new knowledge, memories and connections that will continue long after the program ends.

Now in its fourth year, the FIMS Summer School brings library, information and data professionals together from institutions across Africa for shared learning around emerging topics shaping their fields.

Those conversations are already finding their way beyond Western, with participants sharing what they've learned at their home institutions and building connections across countries and communities.

Thank you to this year's participants for spending these two weeks with us, and for sharing your experiences, perspectives and expertise so generously. 💜

Cultivating Sustainable Collections Conference
Western University
September 11-13, 2026.

There is an urgent need for systemic change in how cultural institutions preserve, use, care for, and understand collections in the face of the climate crisis.

Join this SSHRC-supported gathering to focus in on advancing sustainable practices in collection management and preventive conservation.

Organized by the Centre for Sustainable Curating, led by Kirsty Robertson (Visual Arts), co-applicants Sarah Smith (FIMS) and Heather Igloliorte (University of Victoria), and collaborator Rachel Deiterding (McIntosh Gallery).

Chosen family. Queerplatonic. Gender euphoria.

Words carry meaning, history and identity. But what happens when those words don't exist in the systems we use to organize knowledge?

New SSHRC-supported research from FIMS faculty member B.M. Watson is helping expand the Homosaurus, an international LGBTQ+ vocabulary used by libraries and archives around the world to make queer stories easier to find, preserve and connect with across languages and cultures.

Access to knowledge starts with language. And when people can search using words that reflect who they are, they are far more likely to find themselves in the record.

“There’s no real substitute for having people represent themselves."

Savannah Simon and Olivia Couchie both found they were often the only Indigenous people in the room.

As the inaugural recipients of #WesternU's Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) Black and Indigenous Student Fellowship, they’re helping ensure Indigenous stories, histories and knowledge are preserved and shared through authentic perspectives.
