Who picks up the goods — and who takes the risk from that moment?

EXW (Ex Works) means the seller makes the goods available at their place; the buyer loads, ships, clears export, and takes the risk from there.

Why it matters: EXW is the seller's lightest Incoterm. It's great for domestic pickups — but if you're crossing a border, export clearance sits with the buyer, and the ICC cautions that often FCA is cleaner for exports.

Freight Terms Explained #5. Have you ever used EXW for a cross-border shipment, or do you switch to FCA? Tell us below 👇

Clearing the port is not the finish line for the shipper.

The cargo still needs to reach its warehouse, factory or site. That final movement should be part of the plan from the start, not arranged at the last minute.

When requesting a quote, tell us about:
• Pickup requirements
• Final delivery location
• Vehicle or site access requirements
• Whether inland delivery is needed: Yes / No / Not sure

Destination trucking is typically excluded from a quote unless it is specifically listed. Stating the requirement early helps keep the delivery plan clear and reduces avoidable coordination at destination.

WestXport coordinates destination trucking through qualified, authorized transport partners. The physical transport is performed by those partners; we manage the coordination as part of our three-step quote process.

Does your team usually arrange inland delivery before the cargo reaches the port, or only after clearance?

Who pays the freight, and who carries the risk? Your Incoterm decides.

Incoterms are ICC rules that say who pays, who ships, and where risk passes between seller and buyer. The current set, Incoterms® 2020, has 11 rules: 7 for any mode of transport and 4 for sea and inland waterway.

Why it matters: pick the wrong one and surprise freight or duty costs, or cargo stuck at the handoff, can land on the wrong side. Always write the rule + named place + year. And remember: Incoterms don't decide ownership or payment terms. Your sales contract does.

Freight Terms Explained #4. Which Incoterm does your team use most, and why? Tell us in the comments 👇

What's a Bill of Lading, and why does your cargo need the right one?

A Bill of Lading (B/L) is the document the carrier issues to the shipper. It's the carrier's receipt for your cargo and the evidence of the shipping contract. An original B/L is often also the document of title: the holder can claim the cargo at destination.

Why it matters: if the B/L is wrong or missing, cargo can sit at the port. (A sea waybill is a receipt and a contract, but it is not a title document.)

What can a 40ft shipment from India to the Middle East and Africa cost right now?

Indicative market reference rates for port-to-port ocean freight:

• Jebel Ali: approx. USD 7,400
• Dammam: approx. USD 9,500
• Mombasa: approx. USD 4,800–5,000 all-in
• Durban: approx. USD 3,015–3,685

Capacity cuts and port congestion on Red Sea and Gulf routes have pushed some South Asia lanes to multi-year highs. The gap between destinations on the same coast can be larger than the gap between months.

Indicative market reference rates only, not a WestXport quotation. Rates move weekly; confirm a live quote for your cargo. These figures are port-to-port ocean freight and exclude import duties and taxes, destination demurrage and detention, inspections, and inland delivery unless listed.

FCL or LCL: which one fits your shipment?

FCL = Full Container Load. You book the whole box (even if it isn't packed full), and it stays sealed for you from origin to destination.
LCL = Less than Container Load. You share the container with other shippers and pay only for the space your cargo uses (CBM).

Cargo can arrive at the destination port and still wait. Customs clearance is one of the most common reasons this happens.

Before requesting a shipment quote, confirm:
• Is destination customs clearance support needed?
• Who will handle the clearance?
• Which documents, permits, and authorizations are required?

At WestXport, we coordinate customs brokerage through appropriately authorized partners when required. Regulated customs brokerage activities are performed by those qualified third parties, not directly by WestXport.

Flag customs support in your quote request. This allows it to be coordinated and priced as part of the shipment plan, rather than discovered after the cargo reaches port.

A clear destination plan helps buyers avoid preventable delays and keep responsibility visible from the start.

How early does your team usually confirm customs clearance arrangements?

Ever wondered what "TEU" actually means?

TEU = Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit. One 20-foot container = 1 TEU. A 40-foot container = 2 TEU.

Why it matters: ship sizes, port volumes and global trade stats are all counted in TEU, so it's the first number to know when anyone talks container capacity.

3 freight myths that still cost shippers money.

FOB is not the right Incoterm for containers. Ocean rates are not all-in. And sailing does not lock your ETA — congestion and rerouting still move schedules.

Which myth has bitten your team the hardest?

A headline rate is only the starting point.

For 40ft high-cube port-to-port ocean freight from West India, indicative weighted market averages are:

West India (Nhava Sheva / Mundra) → North America: approximately $10,998
West India → North Europe: approximately $6,013

Route-specific quotes to Long Beach or Houston may sit roughly between $8,400 and $11,500, depending on the week and equipment. Comparing headline numbers alone can mislead. Weighted market averages and route-specific rates are not the same.

These are indicative market reference rates only, not a WestXport quotation.

743,600,000 TEU. That's how much cargo the world's top 100 ports handled in 2024.

Shanghai alone handled 51.5 million. The biggest ships now carry more than 24,000 TEU, and over 80% of world goods trade by volume moves by sea.
Every one of those boxes needs the right route, paperwork and timing, from origin to destination.

Which number surprised you most?
