These photos were taken from the celebratory opening of sculpture and graphic work of Nancy Bowen @nunufineart in Little Italy. It’s great to see the praise roll in for her boisterously feminist sculpture that invokes Vedic deities, Flying Dutchman ghost ships, pagan Mother cults and so much more. The work on paper is as rich as the sculpture, deconstructing dictionaries and rearranging language in brilliantly colored maps to new constellations of meaning. The show is up through Saturday. #nancybowenarts #drawingandsculpture #polychromesculpture #contemporaryart by @westyny1

Two more days for the luscious paintings of #tessagreeneobrien @alexandregallery. The absorbing physical gnarliness of support/surface repurposed to haunting meditations on figures in Maine landscapes. Bonnard’s glow dissolving into the fabric of the canvas. Memory and presence are invoked along with the physical pleasures of a multi-layered painting process aimed at capturing the the richness and transience of a lived-in landscape. #contemporarypainting #abstractlandscape #painteddreams by @westyny1

Jack Solomon was one of the first artists I met after I moved to NYC in 1980. Always the nicest guy, and it’s so inspiring to watch him continue to make great work in his 90s. His recent paintings are some of his most abstract but far more populated with graphic events than his superb Minimalist work from the late 60s. The Surreal collage element links these paintings to Trevor Winkfeld, some Joe Brainard and even late Jasper Johns. Like Johns, Solomon’s paintings are lit with afternoon indoor cafe light of Cubist interiors. Meantime, the graphic fragments suggest a lifetime of pleasures taken from engaging with a full range 20th Century styles, with a special nod to Art Deco. Smithson would approve. Deco echoes. Completely absorbing. @markelfinearts 20th Street location in Chelsea. #djacksolomonartist #postcubism #contemporaryart #modernpainting by @westyny1

Last few days for the wonderful #joansemmel exhibition @thejewishmuseum I think of it as a holding place for an even larger museum survey. Her POV of her own body and sometimes the adjacent body of her partner metamorphosizes flesh into luminous landscape while consecrating aging through paint. She’s forever changed our perspective on the figure. I was proud to be a colleague of hers in my early days at Rutgers. What a painting history at that school! #contemporarypainting #modernart #figurativepaintings #masongrossschoolofthearts by @westyny1

Last few days to see the Symbolist abstract paintings of#emilychengart @silverlensgallery Orbs, planets, cosmic eggs hovering above the low horizon crescents of bigger bodies, as though it was orbs all the way up and down, along with with the filagree of industrious scaffolding from some unfinished project on a solar system scale. The paintings feel like healing diagrams fleshed out in richly chromatic oil paint (the brazen swirls of ultramarine!). Prayers for survival and better times, maybe. #contemporarypainting #abstractbodies #symbolistabstraction by @westyny1

The #paulklee exhibition @thejewishmuseum is a heartbreaking and exhilarating survey of the last decade of his art, under the pressures of the encroaching darkness of Nazism and his own debilitating disease that was to end his life just as WWII was getting underway. The inventiveness in his abstraction and abstracted figuration seems inexhaustible in an exhausting historical moment. It helps one to take heart. A must see to get acquainted with #theangelofhistory #thebluerider #20thcenturyart #abstractfiguration by @westyny1

Dike Blair’s beautiful exhibition of paintings at Chelsea Karma ( @karmakarma9 ) is down, but I’m still marveling over its resonance with the nearby museum quality Vuillard show @skarstedtgallery. Both painters pack the material surfaces of a domestic world into a frame and their art correspondingly thrives on a small scale that invites us to notice what’s available to our glance around our own rooms. Vuillard’s world is enveloped by patterns and the curves of bodies in a smudgy light revealed by half-open doors. Blair’s world is our present day: dry wall and swimming pools, the corner of a Mondrian and lamps reflected in double-paned windows. Swimming pools are to Blair what sardines and asparagus were to a prematurely aged Manet, sites of light sinking into liquid surfaces, in Blair’s case you also say “depths”, rendered with succulent precision. For all three artists, paint consecrates the corners and small plates of the anti-heroic into a kind of transcendence. #smallscalepainting #dikeblair #vuillard #modernism #contemporarypainting by @westyny1

One more week for the lovely show of #jillmoser paintings and collages on paper at @markelfinearts space on 10th Ave. Jill invited her vast array of artist/writer friends to collaborate and I was happy to be among those asked. My micro essay is titled “Sex on the Beach”. All the collaborations are placed below their corresponding works by Jill. It makes for an engrossing, multi-vocal installation with Jill’s sensually elastic abstraction remaining the constant. Each work is an artist’s treatise on color, edge and the long memory of artists’ forms. There’s a wonderful book accompanying the exhibition. #poetsandpainters #abstractpainting #artonpaper contemporaryart by @westyny1
