Appropriate Yolanda Zhang Red fabric, paper, oil pastel, acrylic paint, red tissue paper, bedspread For this open-themed work, I began with an abandoned drawing located in the third-floor hallway outside our classroom. Its lingering presence, unchanged over time, felt both familiar and unresolved. I chose to appropriate this fragment, not simply to reuse it, but to enter dialogue with it and reframe it within a new context. The imagery of the original work naturally led me to themes of the female body and the gaze directed toward it. In response, I constructed an enclosed installation using large red curtains that sectioned off part of the hallway, creating an intimate, semi-private environment. A bedspread placed on the floor invited viewers to remove their shoes and physically enter the space, encouraging a more vulnerable and grounded engagement. The adjacent floor-to-ceiling window remained visible from the outside, partially veiled with red tissue paper that cast a tinted, bodily hue. This allowed passersby to glimpse the interior, positioning the work between exposure and concealment. Within this space, I created oil pastel drawings that explore female nudity, body image, and systems of looking—not limited to the male gaze, but extending to internalized and societal perspectives. I intentionally blended my drawings with the existing marks on the wall, forming a quiet exchange with the unknown artist. This gesture reflects both empathy and shared experience. #art #artist #instillationart by @wetartbread
<The Thigh of Yolanda> Yolanda Zhang Clay and acrylic paint /Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce... The Thigh of Yolanda/ Good evening to you all, it is a pleasure to see you all here today, my name is chef Zhang, and I am delighted to present to you today's special meal: the thigh of yolanda. This piece of exquisite meat comes from our very own farm, freshly cut, well seasoned, and will be brought to your plates from none other than the head chef, myself. How we will proceed today's meal will be as follow: I will cut the meat and bring them to you. Then, as you feast, i want to ask you to shape the meat with your hands, into any form that comes into your mind as a response to my presentation and this piece. Does everyone understand what they're doing? wonderful! Then, let us begin! Bon appétit everyone! by @wetartbread
