The Y11 Mascot Derby kicked off this week with all Y11 tutor groups creating their own mascots for a bit of healthy competition ahead of their mock exams after half term. Students have been earning achievement points for demonstrating ambition, resilience, leadership and kindness which allow them to enter loyalty cards into a daily raffle for the chance to win a prize for their entire tutor group. So far 'The Banana's' have won doughnuts, 'Sheep' have enjoyed breakfast brioches and the 'Bampions' have been treated to sweets! Who will win next week's prizes - Castle for Miss Lister 🐉 or River for Mr Webb 🐊? by @weydon_school

Some of our Year 10 aspiring student leaders joined the current Senior Six for a drop in Q&A, learning more about student leadership roles at Weydon and what it really takes to be part of the Senior Six. We were so impressed by the ambition, enthusiasm and maturity of our Year 10 cohort. The future of student leadership at Weydon is in good hands. by @weydon_school

A huge thank you to Julie Trice from the @fbka_farnham Yellow-Legged Hornet Team for coming into @me_weydon, Weydon Micromission Earth Group, and sharing such important information with us. 🐝
Our key message from Julie was the importance of being able to identify the species and report sightings quickly, so that the tracking team can locate and remove nests before they become established.
We also discussed the first confirmed yellow-legged hornet nest in South Farnham. Thankfully, the National Bee Unit was able to track down and destroy the nest, but this is a useful reminder of why vigilance really matters.
Yellow-legged (Asian) hornets are highly effective predators of pollinators, including honey bees, as well as other insects. Recognising and reporting sightings quickly gives specialists the best chance of preventing them from becoming established.
This autumn, please look out for nests as the leaves begin to fall, when they can become easier to spot.
And in May, as a school, we will continue to monitor our local area and share our top tips for identifying and reporting yellow-legged hornets.
A huge thank you to Julie for helping our young people understand how they can play a part in protecting our precious pollinators and biodiversity. 🌱🐝

The geography department and Y10 have had a fantastic week in Swanage as part of their GCSE fieldwork investigations. Highlights included a geography themed sand castle competition, measuring the sand dune characteristics, walking along the Jurassic coastline, interviewing members of the public about climate change, the arcade evening and lots and lots of ice cream! Bring on the final trip next week. by @weydon_school
